Show Marriott-Slaterville City History July 2009 Summer arrived in July, after an unusually cool and wet June. Though the temperature rose, we didn't see the over 100° we experienced last summer. The July 2009 Pioneer Post contained a message from Mayor Keith Butler. He reported there were only a few flooding problems which occurred during the spring, even with the unusually wet June weather. The storm water basin on 700 South is operational and will relieve storm water stress on the Marriott Ditch and 12*i Street. Several storm drains were cleaned to prevent clogging of the drains. The 400 North Reconstruction Project is on schedule for October of this year, with the road redesign currently being engineered. A public hearing was set for July 16, 2009, at the City Council Meeting beginning at 6:30 p.m. The design was presented by the engineer for review by the council. Mayor Butler invited residents to attend to learn more about the project and to give comments. The Mayor and Bill Morris have spent many hours this month meeting with UDOT and J-U-B, the project engineer, in getting the plans prepared for this road project. The new bowery at the Slaterville Park is completed and available for reservation. The Fourth of July celebration will be held at the Marriott Park, where the new bowery is now finished. Other improvements at the park will continue throughout the summer. These include sod replacement, playground improvements and possible pressurized sprinklers. The park at City Hall is nearing completion. Park reservations can be made by contacting the City Office at 801-627-1919, Ext. 202. The Mayor also told us that Marriott-Slaterville is not facing the struggle with budget problems and raising taxes, as many local and state governments are. Even with the recession, the city had a modest surplus last budget year. The new budget was approved by the city council without any municipal property tax. Both branches of city government worked hard to keep the budget balanced. The only increase was for extra garbage cans which Waste Management increased from $3.75 to $4.25. He encouraged all residents to maintain individual budgets and prepare for the possibility of continuing deterioration in the economy. Be aware of the issues that individuals and the community face. One of our community's biggest entertainment events of the year is our annual Independence Day celebration. Jerry Stanger was in charge of the celebration this year, as the long-time chair, Pam Slater, expected to be out-of-town. Jerry and his assistants did a great job, and we thank them for all the hard work which brought about an enjoyable celebration for all who attended. It began on July 3, 2009, with the Founder's Day Golf Tournament at the Ben Lomond Golf Course. Danny Brown was again in charge of the event, which enticed 48 golfers. We congratulate the two teams who tied for first place-Dale Thompsen's and Danny Brown's teams. A 5K run-from the Marriott Park to the Marriott-Slaterville L. D. S. Church and back to the park, began at 7:00 a.m. under the direction of Robert Hirschi. There were 73 runners participating. Michael Hancock came in first for the men, with Blakely Charlesworth on the women's side. However this year, it was decided to have each entrant guess his race time, with the one being the closest to be the winner of the race. Jonathan Spencer was the winner-he guessed his time within 2 seconds! He also finished second, after Mike Hancock. Breakfasts were held at the Marriott Park and at the L.D.S. Church Bowery, beginning at 8:00 a.m. These were sponsored by the LD.S. wards in the community. The parade entrants lined up on 700 South, with it starting at 10:30 a.m. It proceeded from 700 South along 1200 West to Marriott Park. There were bicycles, tricycles, wagons, cars, trucks, floats, and walkers. The Grand Marshalls, Julian Powell and Lee Stanger, were driven by Don Stanger in his Model A. Mayor Butler drove a vintage car carrying Laree Shurtleff, Pearl Stanger, and Virgie Storrer as the lovely queens of the celebration. Winners in the parade were as follows: 156 |
