Show The Pioneer Post Volume XI Issue 7 Marriott-Slaterville City Newsletter July 2009 Mayer's message Keith H. Butler, Mayor Our wet spring is now becoming summer, and I hope that it finds you well. Fortunately, there were only a few flooding problems this spring despite the wet weather as our continuing investment in storm water management progresses. The storm water basin on 700 South in now operational to relive storm water stress on the Marriott Ditch and 12th Street. Various storm drains were cleaned in the city this spring to keep the drains from clogging. The 400 North Reconstruction Project is on schedule for October. The road re-design is currently being engineered. A public hearing is set before the City Council on July 16, 2009, at 6:30 PM to review the design presented by the engineer. Please plan to attend the hearing to find out more about this project and give your comments to the project engineer. Hopefully you have had the chance to see our new and renovated parks in the community. The new bowery at Slaterville Park is now open and is available for reservation. The new bowery at Marriott Park will host the Fourth of July. Before making a reservation, keep in mind that there will be more improvements at Marriott Park throughout this summer. The Park at City Hall is also nearing completion. I hope that you can attend the "Music at the Park" on July 18th at 7:00 PM to see this new park. On July 1st, the city started its new budget year. You may have seen news reports on state and local governments struggling with budget problems and raising taxes, but this is not the case in Marriott-Slaterville. Even with the recession, we enjoyed a modest surplus last budget year. Again, our new budget was approved by the city council without any municipal property tax. We have worked hard in both branches of government to keep our budget balanced. The only increase has been for extra garbage cans which increased from $3.75 to $4.25, as a result of a Waste Management fee increase. I encourage you to do you own budget planning and preparations in the event that the economy continues to deteriorate. Next year may be more difficult than many expect based upon the trends visible in local government. Thank you for being aware of the issues that you and your community face.
