Show Senior Health Connection Intermountain mckay dee Hospital Center June 2009 <<cThose who bring sunshine to the Cives of others cannot fieep it from themselves.' —James Matthew Bar- rie Sun Safety: What you Need to Know Knowing about sun safety may save your life. Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States, and it's estimated that over 1 million people will get skin cancer this year. That's the bad news. The good news is skin cancer is preventable because over 90% of all skin cancers are caused by exposure to UV radiation from the sun's rays. Are you ready for more good news? Reducing exposure to UV radiation not only helps prevent skin cancer, it also helps prevent wrinkles and dark spots on the skin, known as photoaging. Melanoma is the most common type of skin cancer and the good news is that most melanomas can be found early and treated successfully. Here are some of the warning signs of melanoma: • A mole that has changed in asymmetry, color, or diameter. • A sore that does not heal. • The spread of pigment from a mole to surrounding skin. • A change in sensation (itchiness, tenderness, or pain). • Change in surface of the mole. Some of the ways to prevent melanoma are to protect yourself from intense sunlight, by staying in the shade as much as possible, wearing sunglasses, a hat, and proper clothing. Sunscreen is important, but not usually enough protection by itself. Remember to see your doctor for regular skin exams.
