Emergency Planning A Weber County CERT training began on January 22, 2009, and citizens were invited to attend and learn to be better prepared for emergencies. The Community Emergency Response Team asked for donations for emergency items to stock for the city's CERT storage units. Items needed included first aid supplies, flashlights, blankets, duct tape, scissors, crescent wrenches, sheets, and plastic bags. A donation box was located at the City Office, where a complete list of items needed was posted. The city hosted an Emergency Management Training on May 13, 2009, at 6:30 p.m. at the Municipal Building. The topic was "who does what when a disaster occurs." At a meeting held at the City Office, the Weber County Health Department distributed booklets entitled Family Emergency Preparedness Guide. It contains valuable information on various emergencies and how an individual or family can be prepared. Senior Citizen Activity The January McKay-Dee's Senior Health Connection focused on staying healthy this winter. Older adults are more susceptible to hypothermia, and should dress warmly, keep dry, and have good nutrition. When outdoors, dress warmly, wearing a hat if possible. Half of body heat is lost through the head. Check windows and doors for cracked or worn sealants. Heat only those rooms that you use, to conserve energy, but don't set your thermostat below 65°. Take breaks when doing winter chores such as shoveling snow. Wear non-skid boots or shoes with plenty of traction to avoid slips and falls. This is good advice for not only for seniors, but for everyone. A free educational series for caregivers was held at Weber Human Services, 237 26th Street, in Ogden, beginning on March 20, 2009, and continuing through May 15, 2009. The McKay-Dee Senior Health Connection sponsored a visit by Amy Drake on April 7, 2009, at the Senior Center. Tips for a more effective visit with a doctor were given. They also hosted a Bingo Game for Seniors on April 29*i at 2:00 p.m. at the McKay-Dee Hospital. 17 |
