Show Marriott-Slaterville City History October 2009 How quickly a year passes-the October issue of The Pioneer Post reminded us that it is time again to nominate others in the community for the annual community awards. This is residents' opportunity to recognize someone in our city for going above and beyond as a neighbor, business, contributor, leader or volunteer. The categories are: The Good Neighbor Award-a neighbor or business that is an exemplary example. Elna Lucas Community Culture/History Award-a person who has contributed to our local community history and culture during the year. H. Orvil Holley Youth Leadership Award-any youth who has shown outstanding leadership. Darrell Mecham Community Service Award-an extraordinary volunteer in the community. The deadline for nominations is November 30, 2009. The nomination, with a short statement supporting your nominee, should be sent to Mayor Keith Butler, Marriott-Slaterville City, 1570 West 400 North, MSC, UT 84404. We were reminded of the municipal election to be held November 3, 2009, at the city building. The State Election Law requires every voter to provide valid voter identification, even if you are personally known by the poll worker. A dumpster was located at both the Marriott and Slaterville Parks from October 16-18, 2009, a complimentary service sponsored by the city and Waste Management. A special metal recycle dumpster is in the rear parking at the City Office, for scrap metal. The month of October brings thoughts of Halloween. This year residents were invited to "Come circle the wagons around the haunted grounds (otherwise known as the Slaterville Park, 250 North 2200 West)" on October 31. It was the annual Trunk or Treat, sponsored by the city. We were invited to decorate our cars, bring a carved pumpkin, dress up in costume, and bring treats for the young people. Set up started at 5:30 p.m., and treats started at 6:00 p.m. Chili, hot dogs, donuts and hot chocolate were served. Prizes were given for the best pumpkin; First Place, the Bart Spencer family; Second Place, Sharon Patillo. Kenneth and Dixie Little received the First Place prize for a decorated trunk, with Roberto and Maree Cottam Loayza getting Second Place. There were amazing costumes and lots of treats. The activity was under the direction of DeAnn Hufstetler, who did a great job. Some of her valuable assistants were Sherrie Wadman, Brenda Holmes and Becky Syme. Randy Phipps dispensed the hot dogs, wearing a hot dog costume; he even brought his own decorated stand. An estimated 500 people attended-and cars were lined up far along all streets leading to the park. In the continuing saga of road construction and the omni-present orange barrels, we received a little good news. In an article published on October 18, 2009, in the Standard Examiner, UDOT announced that the 12th Street construction project will be finished "this winter," and they promised not to touch the road again for at least 40 years. The construction began in October 2008, tearing the road down to dirt, and rebuilding it from Interstate 15 to Washington Boulevard. It included more durable concrete, new curbs and gutters, improved drainage and water and sewer upgrades. Final landscaping may be delayed until spring, but the contractor for the road has until December 31, 2009, to finish their work. Eligible residents were invited to join the Foster Grandparent Program. Foster Grandparents are role models, mentors and friends, who serve in area schools, Head Start Centers, and youth facilities helping children at a critical time in their lives by learning to read, one on one tutoring, and guidance. At the October 15, 2009, City Council Meeting, business licenses were approved for Buffalo Run Adventures, LLC, 130 S. 1500 W., Event Organization, a home occupation, no visiting clientele; Judgement Recovery Services, 1040 N. 300 West, Recovery of Judgments, paper work only will be done 165 |
