ALCOHOL- INTRODUCED BY THE ARABS Originally, the word al-kohol or al- kuhl described the black eye paint used by Eastern women. Later, it designated any very finely divided powder, and then the best or finest part of a substance. The Majorcan alchemist, Raymond Lully, distinguished in Arabist learnings, knew the art of distillation. He is famous in pharmaceutical history for his aqua vitae or qua ardens, which he regarded as a panacea for all ills.
