However, at the time of his discovery neither he, nor his friend, Clement, in whom he confided, recognized the elemental nature of the substance. In this respect, both Humphry Davy and Joseph Louis Gay-Lussac entered into the picture. Davy gave it the name iodine, from the Greek word ion- meaning violet.
