With a dozen countries now annexed and their populations toiling under the lash of armed taskmasters, producing implements and munitions to be turned on their surviving compatriots in distant lands; with other millions of sympathetic friends defending their homes and families from the same insatiate monster of greed and treachery; with a war of insensate fury encircling the globe, threatening civilization with a conflagration of hatred here and there by the stupid dupes or cunning arsonists of an egomaniac, there is no time to be lost by those who wish to save their homes, their liberties, their families, their holdings and their right to live in the records of their communities or in the memories of posterity. Here in these United States we have suffered ourselves to be beguiled and our government to be handicapped by the siren songs of appeasement and the obsolete assurance of isolation until contempt of an inferior foe could no longer be restrained. So the enemy struck and found our sentinels asleep struck and shattered the hopes of appeasers struck and demolished the sham of isolaton struck and exposed the folly of relying on defensive tactics against an unscrupulous foe struck and sent hundreds of our boys and men to their deaths struck to awaken and divided people to a sense of peril and the need of unity.
