Show The bowery at the Marriott Park was operable for the July 4*i celebration. Additional improvements such as safety improvements, a new playground, and possibly a pressurized irrigation system were made or are planned, under the grant. The new fence at the Marriott Park is a great improvement; when the project is finished, the gate will be kept locked. The new bowery was dedicated on July 4, 2009, following the parade. Mayor Keith Butler issued Official Proclamation, 2009-01, on March 31, 2009, supporting National Arbor Day. He recognized the volunteer time of residents who planted trees in the gardens behind the municipal complex, and urged all citizens to plant trees in the community. Marriott-Slaterville City can be proud of its designation as a Tree City USA for several years. This year the city was again named a Tree City USA by the Arbor Day Foundation, which honors the city's commitment to community forestry. This was the fourth year our city has received the national recognition. Lynette Deru represented the city at the award ceremony on April 15, 2009. Volunteers were requested to plant trees at the Municipal Gardens on April 25, 2009, which was the designated Arbor Day for the city. However, the event had to be postponed to May 2, because of rain. The city was again nominated this fall for the Tree City USA Award from the National Arbor Day Foundation. Getting this nomination was helped by all the volunteers who assisted with community forestry and gardens this year. Special thanks were given in The Pioneer Postto two local nurseries, Tri City Nursery, who donated a Golden Deodare "Aurea" Cedar, and Lomond View Nursery who donated a rose bush. Activities Youth of our City, in grades 9-12, were invited to join the Marriott-Slaterville Youth Council. Darren Erwin is the Youth Council Advisor. The council has quarterly activities which give the youth opportunities to learn about local government, as well as to volunteer in the community. The Youth Council attended the Local Officials' Day at the State Legislature, during this year's session. At the March 19, 2009, City Council meeting, Zack Spencer spoke on behalf of the Youth Council, reporting on the trip to the State Capitol Building. They heard several speakers and had lunch on the Local Officials' Day. An Easter Egg Hunt for children 1 through 8 was held on April 11, 2009, at the Slaterville Park, beginning at 10:00 a.m. It was sponsored by the city and the Les Olson Company. The Youth Council, under the direction of Darren and Angela Erwin, was in charge of the event. In spite of a somewhat rainy day, approximately 110 children attended. They were divided into three age groups: three years of age and under, four to seven, and eight years old (with a few nines). There were 1200 candy-filled eggs hidden, and 500 other pieces of candy distributed. The hit of the event was a visit by the Easter Bunny, who handed out chocolate eggs to the children. Julie and Daniel Holley also helped. Thanks to them, the Youth Council and especially their hard-working advisors, for such a fun community event. Summer activities in the community were announced in the June issue of The Pioneer Post. Summer tennis lessons for beginners, under the direction of Val Currie, were held from June 8 to 12, and June 15 to 19, five classes each set of 1 1/2 hours per class. They were at the BDO Tennis Courts, 391 Standard Way, for those 7 years of age and older. The cost was $10.00 per set, with rackets and balls available at no charge. Parents were required to accompany those ages 7-12, and could take the lessons at no charge. An Evening of Music at the Park was held at the City Hall Park on July 18, 2009, beginning at 7:00 p.m. It featured Lenore Spencer's witty stories, and a sing-along of familiar tunes which she led. This was followed by Todd Spencer's original music. A good crowd attended and enjoyed the evening's entertainment, as well as cookies and ice water after the program. The next Music in the Park was held on Saturday, August 15, 2009. Because it rained Friday night and Saturday morning early, it was held in the Senior Center. Lynette Deru led Lucas Deru, Kole and Kembree Fillpot who performed What Do You Do in the Summertime. The Jenson family of Roy, played a number of songs. These events provide excellent family entertainment. 14 |
