Show The Pioneer Post Volume XI Issue 1 Marriott-Slaterville City Newsletter January 2009 State of the City Keith H. Butler, Mayor Another new year has arrived and I give my annual report on the status of our community. It is hard to believe that Marriott-Slaterville is in its tenth year as a city. In 1999, when this city was started, we began without anything but a few pencils and some scratch paper. We met in the board room of the old Weber Fire Station in the Weber Industrial Park. Thanks to Steve Mecham we got our first building in the old weigh station on Defense Depot Ogden. By squirreling away money for the next five years, and with the help of city staff obtaining grants, we built our new city building paid-in-full. From our humble beginnings, our accomplishments over the last decade are the envy of other cities and towns across the state. As promised years ago, the city still has not imposed a municipal property tax or additional franchise taxes. If we have the fortitude to keep to our general plan and zoning policies, I believe that the city will continue to avoid a property tax. Also, the city still has no debt. At the same time, the city has improved services such as: law enforcement, solid waste collection and disposal services, 5-year rotation road maintenance program, new storm water facilities to reduce flooding, constructing multiple parks, new park personnel, preserving open space, a trails program, creating a business district, facility for meetings and gatherings, representation on various organizations and districts, a senior citizens center and program, cultural activities, CERT and emergency management, our newsletter, and other services. I am grateful to our many businesses within our city. Over the past year, there have been several major new companies move into the city. Our policies welcome those businesses that are allowed within the zoning regulations. Each of our new businesses is welcome and grateful to be part of our community. Our many accomplishments over the last decade were made possible because of our city council, staff, and many volunteers. The planning commission works tirelessly to make sure that development is held to the zoning regulations. Our park committee is responsible for making the plans and working to create a new bowery at Slaterville Park and the municipal gardens behind the city office. Thank you to our city council, planning commission, staff, and volunteers who contribute to the community. Keep up the good work. Lastly, I know that many of you are concerned about finances in this recession. Our independent audit was just completed last month and shows that our city is living within its means, and we had a modest surplus last fiscal year. In the current budget, I have built in contingencies for the hard economic times that we are now experiencing. We all may need to tighten our belts some in 2009. Please be considerate and patient if some projects are delayed. I appreciate your understanding and hope that you and your family will meet the challenges ahead.
