Show Fast (cont'd) March 3, 2009 make it more meaningful. Youth Pastor Michelle Perry, of West Ogden, started her prayer over the meal to break the group's fast several minutes early. "Once it hits 2 o'clock there's no hope," she said. Perry prayed for the youth to understand what it means to give of themselves. She also asked God to bless them for the sacrifice they had made. "May your light and your glory shine through them," she said. According to the Word Vi sion Web site, www.wordvi- sion.org, hunger and preventable disease claim the lives of 26,000 children a day. Annually, more than 10 million children under the age of 5 die from disease and malnutrition as a result of hunger, states the site. Perry said a handful of local churches and schools participated. Wasatch Church of Roy was one of them. Among the service projects participating youth could perform during their fast were serving dinner Friday and lunch Saturday to the homeless at St. Ann's Center and bagging food at the Ogden Food Bank. Travis Boren, 13, of Roy, said it was hard to sack up food at the food bank while he was hungry but he discovered Spam in the process. "We had to stop at the store so we could buy some Spam for Travis," Perry said. So Boren decided to end his fast with fried Spam. He had to wait an extra two minutes before he could end his hunger, as the meat was still cooking. "It's good and old-fashioned," he said of the canned meat when he first tasted it. This year the First United Methodist group added sleeping outside in cardboard boxes as one of its activities during the fast. "Hunger and homeless- ness seem to go hand in hand," Perry said. "So we decided to add sleeping outside."
