SNAILS SAVE HUMAN LIVES The discovery of Dr. Paul Bartsch, mollusk curator at Smithsonian Institute, that some snails live only in acid water conditions and others solely in alkaline conditions, led to conquest of the Oriental disease, schistosomiasis. Since the organism was carried by snails living in acid type water, Japanese controlled the disease simply by alkalizing water with crushed limestone. Rice workers particularly were stricken.
