Show COMMUNICATXON Editor Standard-Examiner: "When I called attention through j your paper to the emergency in the j affairs of the Weber county school j! board which forced some pupils of 1 high school age to attend a church school in Ogden if. was not with intent to provoke any controversy. Superintendent Fowler's explanation of the situation is clarifying- a,s well as very frank. T am still in doubt, however, as to the legal , features of the matter. I take it' for granted that in paying the, transportation expenses of stud ents j attending the Weber college the j board knows whether it is proceed -, ing along legal lines, or not. In Utah the matter of keeping state affairs separate from church j affairs will always be a live issue, j To pay any part of the expenses! of a student in a, church school, or j la private school, out of public j ! school funds will always be challenged as of doubtful propriety, to say "the least. It can hardly be) defended except as an emergency! measure. Personally I have no doubt but that the Weber county board is doing its best to cope with the situation. BMut a situation exists that- can only be permanently cured through Weber county establishing its own high school. O. A. KENNEDY. |
