Show Awards Given To Shooters Shield Goes to School, Medals, Sweaters to Team Members The closing assembly of the school year was held at the Ogden High school this morning with William Petty, president of the student body, presiding. Presentation of the William Randolph Hearst rifle contest shield, given to the high school in recognition of twice winning the national interscholastic event and finishing second in 1924, was one of the features. It was presented to Principal A. M. Merrill by Al Warden of The Standard-Examiner''and Utah representative of the Chicago Evening American. Silver medals from Mr. Hearst were presented to the seven members of the team by Captain L. E. Ryder, U. S. A. W. Karl Hopkins, superintendent of schools, presented each member of the team with a sweater with an old English "O" together with crossed rifles, as tokens of appreciation from the board of education. The members of the team receiving awards were: Captain Joe Kershisnik, Lawrence Skeen, Dale Kimes, Clyde Stone, Stanley Hall, William Capes and Robert Crosby. FINS ALSO GIVEN. In accepting the shield for the school, Principal Merrill thanked Mr. Hearst for his interest in the school and congratulated the members of the team on their splendid showing. William Petty was presented with a gold pin by Mrs. Gertrude Coolidge in behalf of the student body. Gold pins were awarded to Earl Murray, Jean Chez and John O'Neill of the Classicum, Alyson Smith, Don Wakefield and Lewis Iverson for debating, and Althea Thomas and Chester Zinn for oratory. These awards were made by President Petty.' Superintendent Hopkins presented the J. S. Lewis trophy to the school. This trophy was won by Miss Thomas and Chester Zinn in the recent oratorical contest. TROPHY PRESENTED. George Eccles awarded the school the Eccles cup which has been put up for: tennis competition. Alyson Smith and Ralph Pug- mire won the first leg on the cup by defeating Weber's team recently. The cup must be won three times in order to remain the property of the school. He congratulated the two boys on their splendid showing. Frank Francis in his address paid tribute to the graduates and wished them success in their future attainments. Tallmadge Boyd, president-elect of the student body, gave a short talk in which he asked the support of the student body next season and expressed a desire to stimulate "pep" into the organization. Rulon Budge, Ross Cox, Bill Petty, Firth Garrison, Ellis Wade and Robert Weir received awards for track and basketball. FOR HINCHCLIFF. Alvin Blackburn, president of the boys' glee club, will present Lester Hinchcliff with a leather music bag at a later date, as an appreciation from members of the music department, he announced. Alvin Blackburn, Don Wakefeild and Kenneth Rhead as a trio entertained with three songs. |
