Show Friday Feb 1 '24 Ogden High School Notes A matinee dance will be given this afternoon from 3 to 5 p. m., in commemoration of the O. H. S. victory over Box Elder 'Tuesday snigfet, The dance is given under the auspices of the T. N. T. club. The game (tonight will draw an exceptional crowd on account of Interest awakened by the unbroken series of victories of the Tigers. The novelty lof witnessing the splendid playing of the mutes Is also an attraction. Rifle shooting is becoming very popular with more than a score of rooys who practice an hour or two jdaily. Although the new gallery is ifar from being pretentious or com- . Imodious, it is quite comfortable land the work is carried on under conditions far more favorable than ever before. O. H. S. students have occasion to know that all good people are not dead yet, neither are all kind deeds trumpeted abroad. A prominent M. D. is looking after the physical condition of the boys without hope of reward, and only the other day a successful chiropractor offered his services gratis to any of the players who might desire his skill. It Inadvertently leaked out felso that another well known physician is voluntarily meeting the expenses of a senior who would not otherwise be able to complete his course. At the request of The Standard- Examiner, a set of semester examination. questions in civics, history and economics as given to the classes last week will appear in the Sunday edition of the paper. These will give the patrons an idea of the sort of work being done in these subjects. Thirty prominent young men of Ogden who are taking an extensive course of the University of Utah in banking have volunteered their services to give practical talks before the classes in senior and junior high schools on subjects connected ;with banking, salesmanship, negotiable papers, etc., needless to say their offer was promptly accepted. At the assembly today the orchestra and glee club will furnish the music, While Garff Wilson and Maxine Parker of the oral expression department will give readings. In addition to the regular speaker Supt. W. Karl Hopkins will be invited to give a short pep talk to arouse enthusiasm in a,thletic games. A number of parents have visited the school this week to meet the teachers and to offer their cooperation in securing better preparation of lessons, and raising the BCholarslfip of their children. The visits are appreciated by the teachers. Parents are advised that when a student reports that she has no study preparations to make at home-that she gets them all at school-'the (information should be accepted as an invitation to visit the school to find out the cause. It will always be found that the report, in the words of Mark Twain, !'ha been slightly exaggerated." Ia the interest of scholarship the following rule is in vogue at the high school: "No pupil may take .more than four subjects unless the .previous semester's record shows jthat the student received a grade of G lor above in every subject." (Under no circumstances is it per- farrissHiie for a student to take more than five subjects. The oral expression department was asked today by the University of Utah to submit the names of five classics, five one-act plays, five topics for extemporaneous speak- J dng-that are regarded as suitable for the state contests scheduled for May. A little Tom Sawyer philosophy has been manifested in the English department this week. The teachers rfelt that a few students, possibly 20, will ill-prepared in the mechanics- the fundamentals of English, and should be made to take a review course. Instead of "compelling" (them, the students were offered the opportunity of registering for such course. Result-75 students enrolled. Every year bears evidence of the presence of the common "typewriting delusion." Students come to the high school with the idea that typewriting Is a snap course; that it's only a bit of fun to "hit the typewriter." Every year this delusion is regularly dispelled, for the students soon find that to make a grade in typewriting requires just a little more effort than any other subject. But no harm is done, for the course is very profitable and the time consumed in acquiring skill in the manipulation of the J machine is well spent. 1 |
