Show April 14 - 24 Mon Ogden High School Notes Today's thought: "Art is more god-like than science. Science discovers; art creates."-John Opie. As this is Art week, the daily thought will be about art in ;ts various manifestations. A good beginning was made for art in Ogden last week. On Thursday the Girls' association of the j high school bought one of Le Conte Stewart's pictures as a beginning i of an art collection m the high j school. It may be mentioned in J this connection, however, that the . high school already has several j wonderful pictures of a former instructor, Donald Beauregard. j On Saturday a committee from ; several civic organizations in Ogden met at the high school and se- 1 ! lected another of Mr. Stewart's i i pictures." which they purchased as 1 tfKs ueffHHg nfi, vunifWVIil collection. This picture will be j kept in the schools of Ogden un- i til such time as the city can find a suitable art room in a city-owned building. Ogden high school is particularly fortunate in having had two such promising artists as Donald Beauregard and Le Conte Stewart. Donald Beauregard was stricjfen by death just as he was becoming recognized as one of Utah's great ; artists. J ' I Le Conte Stewart is still a yourg ' man and has already received much attention. His friends are legion, and they are predicting a ' j great future for him. Ogden high school and Ogden : i city are to be congratulated and commended in recognizing and encouraging early such an artist as Mr. Stewart. May he live long to j fulfill the high expectations of his admirers. PRAISE FOR WOMEN. In this connection, all Ogden 1 should recognize the service of the energetic and far sighted women of s Ogden who are encouraging art, 5 drama, music and other fine things ' in our city. We should like to mention a few names, but there 1 are so many that we hesitate, lest j ; we might overlook some. At any rate, we may safely pre- j diet' that the names of some of the j ardent devotees of today will find J their names prominently written ! in the history of Ogden. We suggest that the writer of 1 News and Views who knows the people a.nd the situation so well, give a little praise now and then to some of these community builders, j Every student, every adult in i Ogden should seize the ooDortun- ! ity not once, but two or three times , " -l ml tnr this week, to view the wonderful j verses, one of which ily we quote 1 Utah art collection at the Berthana j today: ana this week and hear sotnie of the j vve'vo got5a champion ri le team lectures that will be given. Mr. Archie Bowman has taken j advantage of Mr. Stewart's presence in Ogden and has enrolled in the art department of the high , school. We recommend that other ; talented townspeople follow Mrs. j ' Bowman's example. j ; We call attention of all students I and townspeople to a very unusual I ' portrait painting that Mis. Bowman S has just completed. This is a portrait of an art student, Miss Rosemary Erhart, and is an especially fine piece of work. -,ot only is the workmanship very fine but the subject, Miss Erhart, lends herself exquisitely to this type of work. The high school is very much indebted to Ogden Rotary club for a ( fine musical treat on Friday afternoon last. The A. C. Glee club and j tne Ariel Musical society of Salt ; Lake were brought to the high j school and gave us one of the most j delightful musicai treats we have enjoyed in many years. Mr. Hinchcliff and the school j orcnestra g-ave the "hour of music." at Weber at their weekly as- j i sembly on Friday morning. The ' Weber college authorities and students were profuse in their praise ) and thanks for this treat. j Mr. Tomkins. head of music department of Boise high school, vis- i itfed the high school on Friday and was very complimentary to the ' I school band and the R. O. T, C. unit for the excellent showing they ' made at the review on Thursday and Friday mornings. TO BE MARRIED. High school students were agree- ably surprised Sunday when tfcey j saw an excellent likeness of one.of j their teachers on the society page j of the Salt Lake Tribune with this j heading: "Miss Edna Romney who j will be married to Elmer I. Noall in June." i as Mr. Noall is also an instructor in the school, the students feel j that his good work this year has ; not been confined wholly to the j wood-working department. We congratulate these instructors most I heartily. Knowing bot'h as we do, we must arise to remark that each has chosen wisely and well, and we can predict a pleasant happy voyage. Next! ? ! ? BEAUTIFYING OGDEN. Tomorrow is Arbor day, and a school holiday. As this week -s also I Civic week it is expected that every I student will do some big piece of work at home tomorrow in cleaning up yards, in planting trees and tiowers and helping in many ways to make Ogden a more beautiful city. Students and teachers were very I much pleased with the write-up in Sunday's Standard-Examiner of ! Supt. W, Karl Hopkins They all j said "amen" to the many nice things that were said of our worthy j superintendent, Everybody seems to be boosting ! these days.
