Show Thurs. Feb 14 Ogden High School Notes There were some evidences of spring fever at the high school Wednesday. The boys of the architectural drawing class are spending some time every afternoon visiting down town buildings that are under construction, their object being to get clearer ideas of the details and methods of construction. In a case near the library door the mechanical drawing boys keep a perpetual exhibit of the work being done in this department. New drawings are added frequently, which encourage interest in the exhibits. It seems that the boys have a monopoly on mechanical drawing, carpentry, electrical construction and automobile mechanics, as there is not a girl registered in any of these departments. We wonder why! In one way or another students "work" their teachers much as they aid a hundred years ago. For instance an enthusiastic girl approached her teacher Wednesday at the close of a recitation with "Haa this been a full period? It seems only to minutes since we came in." Wasn't that nice? More and more the thought Is growing that modern language study should appeal more to the ear and less to the sye. i. e., that the language should be spoken and heard, not just read. With this thought in mind the classes in Spanish have organized a club this week to encourage conversation in Spanish and to acquire ability to use the language in a practical way. Lesta Purcell is president of the club and Fred Gentsch is secretary and treasurer. One of the practical and intensely interesting departments of the school is the office machine department. This is located on the first floor of the building in room 114. Here are to be found twenty calculating machines being operated by six different groups during as many periods of the day. The visitor is always surprised and delighted with the facility and rapidity with w'hich all kinds of practical problems are solved. There is an active demand in msiness for good machine opera- ors, and quite a number of gr&du- -tes of this department are com- nanding good salaries in the business houses of Ogden. |
