The LiVe Well Senior's Health Newsletter from McKay-Dee Hospital Center discussed Bladder Cancer Awareness Month in August. It affects most often older adults, though it can occur at any age. Most are found early, when it is highly treatable. Although causes are uncertain, smoking and chemical exposures raises the risk, including arsenic, dyes, and those used in rubber, leather, textiles, and paint products. Whites have a greater risk than do other races; men are more at risk than women. Blood in the urine is the most common symptom. More advanced cancer symptoms include pain in the lower back, swelling in the lower legs, and/or a growth in the pelvis near the bladder. Prevention includes not smoking, be careful with all chemicals, following all instructions. Drink ample water throughout the day. Eat a variety of colorful fruits and vegetables, avoiding fried meats and fats.
