She is now successfully being trained to be a government detection dog. With help, dog finds her purpose in life Toy-lover's energy to be devoted to keeping public safe By JAMIE LAMPROS Standard-Examiner correspondent SOUTH OGDEN — A high-energy dog who may have been put to sleep because she couldn't be adopted has found a new purpose in life, thanks to several local community members. Last October, the South Ogden animal shelter received a call from the Weber County Shelter regarding a little black griffon named Zoey. The dog had been adopted but returned. The shelter then could never place her in a home. "She was a very high-energy dog, and she didn't show well at adoption events because she would bark at people who approached her crate," said Karen Disney, South Ogden animal shelter supervisor. "She hated being in that crate." The South Ogden shelter, which is a no-kill shelter, agreed to take her. Volunteers evaluated her and tried to find her a new home but again had no luck. "A subsequent adoption and foster placement didn't work out because she was destructive in those environments," Disney said. "Her foster mom noticed "She just had a high interest in retrieving a toy, and dogs like that make great detection dogs/' that she had a very high 'ball' drive. She was crazy about playing ball."
