Show Marriott-Slaterville History October 2013 A "Meet the Candidates" evening was held on October 11, 2013, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the City Hall, with about 35 in attendance. Each candidate had the opportunity to present their ideas for the future and betterment of the city. Residents were given the opportunity to ask each candidate any questions they had. Candidates in the coming November 5, 2013, municipal election are: Mayor: Keith Butler and Randy Phipps Council East District: Deibert Hodson and Steven Mecham Council West District: Kim Slater and Erin Holley Many of our trees have suffered a lot of stress, and have been damaged or died, due to the cold, harsh winter and the hot, dry summer of the past year. These valuable assets need good care. Some advice for this time of year: 1. Deep soak trees to a depth of 10-12" unless there is 1 -2" of soaking rain. 2. Prune for dead or diseased branches and for structure. 3. Remove grass growing close to the tree, to avoid damage to the trunk when mowing or trimming. 4. Wrap trees which need some protection from the sun during winter months. 5. Treat iron chlorosis with chelated iron or injections of iron and reduce watering, if ground is very wet. Spring is a better time to use iron, as it is not taken into the soil as well in the fall. Bits and Pieces Kent Leslie Robinson, age 70, died on October 18, 2013. Zula Mae Johnson, daughter of George Whitfield (Whit) and Margaret (Meg) Johnson was born October 24, 2013. Old Hickory Sheds, which opened recently at 1264 W. 12* Street in our city, was featured on October 8, 2013, in the Standard Examiner. Amelia Dominguez faces felony child abuse charges for actions on August 29, 2013, in an incidence which saw neighbors and police hunting for her four children reported missing. Reverse 911 calls awoke many in our city in very early morning hours asking them to report any sightings or information. A Home Fun Run and Chili Cook-off was held October 12, 2013, sponsored by the First United Methodist Church in Marriott-Slaterville. All proceeds went to the George E. Wahlen Veterans Home Activity Fund. A veterans ceremony at 9:40 a.m. began the day, followed by a 5K run/1 mile walk to the Church location, the chili tasting/voting a blood drive, and other activities. It was reported in the October 13, 2013, Standard Examiner The release of a new book, 25th Street Confidential: Drama, Decadence and Dissipation Along Ogden's Rowdiest Road, by historian, and former resident of our city, Val Holley, was announced in the Standard Examiner, on October 13, 2013. Book signings were held in numerous locations in Ogden and Sat Lake City from October 18 through October 23, 2013. Ghosts in our city? A ghost investigation was held on two weekends (October 18-19, and 25-26, 2013) at Sleepy Millcreek Holfow by the Oquirrh Mountain Paranormal Investigators. Proceeds from the affair were donated to Pack 'N Pounce Rescue to buy feed for their rescued animals. 130 |
