Show Dog Story (Cont'd), May 25, 2013 and Game Birds in Marriott- Slaterville. Miller trains dogs for multiple purposes, including domestic training and government agency training. He agreed to work with her. "She had a very high prey drive," Miller said. "A lot of people would see that as aggressive, but it's really not. She just had a high interest in retrieving a toy, and dogs like that make great detection dogs." Miller worked with Zoey for nearly two months, taking her to various locations to test out whether she would be a good bomb sniffer or narcotics dog. She passed the tests with flying colors. "She wasn't distracted by anything," Miller said. "I took her around food, and she would focus on finding the toy. I took her around people, and she would focus on finding the toy. No matter how I tried to distract her, she remained focused." Zoey was then evaluated "You just have to know and recognize what the dogs strength is." by High Creek Kennels owner Dustin Elleman. He trained her for an additional two weeks, at which time she was accepted into the prestigious Vohne Liche Kennels in Indiana, which trains police dogs and other government agency dogs. "She's doing really well there," Miller said. "In fact, I think this is her last week of training and then she will be up for sale." Zoey could return to Utah to do police work, but Miller said any agency in the nation could adopt her and she will do a great job in keeping the public safe. "It's been a great success story all the way around," he said. "You just have to know and recognize what the dog's strength is. She wasn't the fluffy little dog who wagged her tail at everyone, but she still had a important purpose, and we're happy we were able to find that purpose for her." Zoey, a blac griffon, is so toy-focused and full of energy that the South Ogden Animal Shelter had trouble placing her in a home. She is now successfully being traine to be a government detection dc Courtesy of Sout Ogden Animal Shelter Disney said the cooperation and persistence on the part of so many people who understand dogs and the environment they need to be placed in made the story a success. "We had a similar dog come to our shelter recentb she said. "This dog was also a high-energy dog, but we were able to place her into a loving home with a great family." 186 b |
