Show The Pioneer Post Volume XV Issue 2 Marriott-Slaterville City Newsletter February 2013 Winter Safety Tips by Gerald Bischoff, Emergency Management Ice dams are an accumulation of ice at the lower edge of a sloped roof. When interior heat melts the snow, water can run down and refreeze at the roofs edge, where it's much cooler. If the ice builds up and blocks water from draining off the roof, water is forced under the roof covering and into your attic or down the inside walls of your house. To help reduce the risk of ice dams: Make sure your gutters are clear of leaves and debris. Keep the attic well-ventilated so snow doesn't melt and re-freeze on the roofs edge. Make sure the attic floor is well insulated to minimize the amount of heat rising through the attic from within the house. Bursting pipes occur when frozen water causes a pressure buildup between the ice blockage and the closed faucet. Pipes in attics, crawl spaces and outside walls are particularly vulnerable to extreme cold. To keep water in your pipes from freezing: Fit exposed pipes with insulation sleeves or wrapping to slow heat transfer. Seal cracks and holes in outside walls and foundations near water pipes with caulking. Keep cabinet doors open to allow warm air to circulate around pipes. Keep a slow trickle of water flowing through faucets connected to pipes that run through an unheated or unprotected space. Rabies Clinics The Weber County Animal Shelter located at 1373 North 750 West at the fairgrounds is holding rabies clinics March 9 and March 23. Dr. Steve Lemmon, DVM, will provide rabies shots for $15 between 2:00 PM and 4:00 PM. Dog licenses will also be available for $10 spayed/neutered. $25 for non-spayed/neutered. Snow Removal This has been a cold and snowy winter here in Marriott- Slaterville. The county snow plow crews have been out in force clearing roads. Heavy snow and ice storms created snow packed roads that have been a inconvenience for us all. Thank you for your patience and the appreciation you have shown our county road crews while they try to keep our roads plowed. Thanks for keeping your cars off the roads after snow storms so that the snow plows can do their job. Let's hope for a beautiful and warm spring! 2012 Annual Awards Thank you for your nominations for the 2012 annual awards in December.
