Due to the cold, harsh winters and hot, dry summers we have experienced the past couple of years, many trees have suffered a lot of stress and have been damaged or met their demise. Since trees are a natural source of beauty and provide shade, as well as to add value to one's property, it is wise to provide good care for them. Here are a few helps. 1. This time of year it is recommended to deep soak trees to a depth of 10-12", unless there is 1-2" of good soaking rain. This will prepare the trees for winter and is especially necessary for newly planted trees. 2. Pruning is not recommended during this hot summer, but as temperatures cool, it is an excellent time to prune for structure, as well as to remove any dead or diseased branches. 3. This is a good time to remove grass up close to your trees, so that when you mow or trim, you do not damage the trunk. 4. Late October or the first of November is a good time to wrap trees that are damaged or need some protection from the sun's reflection during the winter months. 5. For yellowing leaves, or iron chlorosis, treat with Chelated Iron or injections of iron and reduce watering, if soil is very wet. Elemental sulfur, used regularly will also help. It may be necessary to wait until spring to use the iron, since it is not taken into the soil as well this time of year.
