Show Marriott-Slaterville Monthly History July 2013 The annual Independence Day celebration was a great success again this year. It started off with about 70 people participating in the Golf Tournament at Ben Lomond Golf Course on June 28, 2013. Dale Thompson won first place, Hufstetlers came in second, with the Browns getting third place. Breakfasts sponsored by the L.D.S. wards were held in both Marriott and Slaterville, on July 4, beginning at 8:00 a.m. The 5K Run, under the direction of Bob Hirschi, began at 7:00 a.m. at the Marriott Park. The winner was Jaydon Slater. The line up for the parade began at 10:00 a.m., with Scott VanLeeuwen in charge, and started promptly at 10:30 a.m. Mayor Keith Butler, driving one of Maurice Pitcher's vintage cars, led the way, with Donna Murphy, and Jack and Elna Lucas riding with him. Every year the increased entries get better. And there are always delighted children pedalling tricycles and bicycles, decorated in red, white and blue. This year the award winning floats were: Mayor's trophy: The float honoring the donor for the Anderson liver transplant. Most patriotic: Bret Holley family-Washington crossing the Delaware. Most creative. Pirate Ship-Carl Slater family Peoples' Choice: Bart and the Poor Boys-Bart Spencer, Todd Spencer, and David McKenzie. The City Council members cooked hot dogs and hamburgers, served with all the fixings. Salad and chips rounded out the menu, with drinks available. Will Holley, aided by Erin Holley, coordinated the contests which included a three-legged race, with winners shooting water cannons at those behind them, with separate races for age groups. Balloons tied to the ankles were popped by opponents. Adult contestants, given bibs and baby bottles filled with juice, found it wasn't as easy as they expected as they raced to drain the bottles. Piles of sawdust were filled with small prizes, and children, divided into age groups, dug with enthusiasm, to claim the prizes. The giant slide and the candy cannon were popular as usual. In addition to those already mentioned, a big vote of appreciation goes to Becky Burt for all the work she did with the food and contests. Rob Smout was responsible for the items won in the raffles. Another fun even in July was the Music in the Park held at 7:00 p.m. on July 13, 2013, in the bowery at the City Park. It featured Bart and the Poor Boys, Bart Spencer, Todd Spencer and David McKenzie. It was a great opportunity to enjoy 1960-70s music and socialize with friends. There were 84 in attendance. No Council Meeting was held in July 2013, but residents were kept up-to-date by the July issue of The Pioneer Post. At the June meeting the City Council adopted the budget for Fiscal Year 2013-14, as presented by Mayor Butler. After months of planning, it was again a balanced budget, with a modest surplus to set aside for future capita! projects. The no property tax policy continues with this new budget. Our city is one of the few in the state that operates without a municipal property tax. The City completed the trail project along the Weber River last fall. A lot of positive response and support for the trail has been received. Currently, the City is completing improvements at the Marriott Park and the new Heritage Park Storm Water Basin on 700 South, funded by the Community Development Block Grant program. Under this project the expansion of the Quail Meadows Secondary Water Reservoir, 1300 West and 900 South, was nearly doubled 122 |
