Show Happy 97th Birthday, April 7, 2013 Shurtliff Shurtliff LaRee Elmer Shurtliff of Ogden will be honored for her 97th birthday. Friends and family may attend an open house hosted by her family from 5 to 8 p.m. today, April 7, at 979 W. 17th St., Marriott-Slaterville. No gifts. The eldest of three children, she was born on April 9,1916, to Dowayne Neor Jessop and Pearl Amelia James in Wilson. She married George Wilford Elmer on Nov. 2,1938, in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Logan Temple. He died January 1985. They had nine children; eight are living. She later married Russell Shurtliff in Ogden on Oct. 12,1991; he died in October 1999. She worked for the state of Utah as a driver for Lynn Cruser for more than 20 years until she retired. She did handiwork with embroidery and fine thread crochet (no instructions), providing heirloom pillowcases and table/ dresser linens for her children and grandchildren. She has been an active member of the Daughters of Utah Pioneers for many years and says that she is proud of her pioneer heritage. She was chosen and served as the DUP Ogden Pioneer Days queen in July 2011, She was a temple worker in the Ogden LDS Temple for 18 years until it closed for renovation; Russell served with her until his death. She served in the Young Women's Mutual Improvement Association and in many other callings. She served two LDS missions: in Alabama as a couple with George, and in Arizona as a sister missionary. She has 37 grandchildren, 109 great-grandchildren, eight great- great-grandchildren, and displays many photos of them in her home. 176 |
