Show Honors Honors Honors Certificates—Official recognition will be given for the completion of Departmental Honors and General Honors. Notation of these achievements will be made on the graduating Honors student's transcript and diploma and will be entered into the graduation bulletin. In the event a student completes Departmental Honors requirements in more than one department, notation for each will be made on his transcript. Student Participation—Honors students compose one-half the membership of the Honors Committee and have full rights and responsibilities in the conduct of that Committee. Student involvement is particularly meaningful in the selection and evaluation of Honors faculty. A formal student evaluation of faculty and subject matter is made in all Honors courses. In addition, Honors students may suggest subjects and faculty for new Honors courses. Enrollment in Honors Courses—Total enrollments in Honors courses will remain small in order to allow personal interchange between the Honors student and the professor. Enrollment is open to non-Honors students in the event Honors courses do not fill up with Honors students. Such students must have a GPA of 3.3 or higher or must have permission from the Honors office. Honors Directed Readings or Projects are not open to non-Honors students. Other Opportunities—The Honors office is constantly open for advice and counseling. Honors students will find the Honors office a useful advocate in untangling campus regulations. The Honors office gives particularly useful counseling concerning entrance into graduate and professional schools and preparation for the Graduate Record Examination. In addition, a file on each Honors student's achievements is maintained in the Honors office, on basis of which letters of recommendation can be written in behalf of Honors graduates. Honors Faculty—The Honors Program puts a premium on excellent teaching in Honors courses. Close cooperation occurs between the Honors Program and departments within the college to insure that faculty teaching Honors courses are both effective teachers and persons of unusual competence in their disciplines. The essential Honors experience should be stimulating and rewarding to both the Honors student and the Honors teacher. Special Honors Events—In order to support a campus atmosphere that will attract Honors students, the Honors Pro- 84 gram fosters scholarship, creativity, and research through various forms of recognition. Each year two Honors Convocations are made possible through the generosity of the John J. Cortez Family fund. One of the Honors Convocations features a guest lecturer of national repute. The other features a Weber State College faculty member whose essay has been awarded the first prize in an annual contest involving significant cash prizes. Credit by Examination—Prospective Honors students are urged to obtain as much credit by examination as their abilities and college policy will allow. CLEP and AP credit is especially useful as an indication that the Honors student has entered college at an advanced stage. The Honors student is urged to use the time given him through credit by examination to take advantage of other educational opportunities offered by the college. Entrance Requirements—A student may make application for entrance into the Honors Program at any time after formal acceptance by the college admissions office. However, in order to take advantage of the many options available, early entrance is recommended. An application form is available in the Honors office. The applicant is asked to: 1. Provide evidence of a Grade Point Average or Predicted Grade Point Average (in the case of entering Freshmen) of at least 3.3 2. Provide a recommendation from a college professor, a high school teacher or counselor, or another professional educator. 3. Have an interview with the Director of the Honors Program. It is recognized that a strict adherence to a Grade Point Average standard may at times bar students whose abilities and motivation are of Honors potential. Therefore, any student may present a special petition for admittance. Students who are strongly motivated towards Honors work are urged to make this special petition to the Honors office. Retention Standards for the Honors Program—To stay in the Honors Program, participants must maintain an accumulative 3.3 GPA. In courses taken to fulfill requirements in General Honors, only grades of A and B will be acceptable. On a limited basis, an Honors student who has earned less than a B grade in such a course at the end of the quarter may elect to 85 |
