Show Technology — Utah Skills Center North Technology — Utah Skills Center North Individuals entering the program are evaluated and counseled to determine their areas of vocational interest. They are then provided exploratory experiences in a variety of areas; such as, building trades, machine tool, drafting, welding, sheet- metal sales and retailing, so that they can select areas which they would like to enter for entry-level training or advanced training. The objective of the pre-vocational/vocational program is to provide individuals with entry-level skills for on-the job training or directly entering the job market. These entry-level skills may be classified according to job title as follows: carpenter helper, plumber helper, mason helper, draftsman junior, machine tool helper, welder, sewing machine operator, drapery maker, automotive mechanic helper, upholsterer, carpet and tile layer, electronics assembler, electrician, painter, roofer, and sheet-metal worker. Students may also use their training in conjunction with Adult Basic Education as prerequisite skill preparation for entering vocational education which provides training in the following areas: aircraft instrument repair, diesel service, diesel technology, machine tool, welding, manufacturing technology, data processing, distributive education, sales and retailing, supermarket training, meat cutting, fashion merchandising, interior design, food service, cosmetology, health occupations, and engineering graphics. be effectively trained. Films, demonstrations, field trips and actual participation of the trainees are set up for this orientation in the following areas: (1) Professional Occupations—This area trains students as junior draftsmen, electronics technicians, store managers, and medical assistants. (2) Clerical and Sales Occupations—This area trains students as bookkeepers, accounting clerks, keypunch operators, clerk typists, secretaries, stenographers, typists, general clerks, cashier-checkers, grocery clerks and meat cutters. (3) Machine Trades and Bench Work Occupations—This area trains students as auto mechanic helpers, auto repair servicemen, machinist helpers, electronics assemblers, sewing machine operators and upholsterers. (4) Structural Occupations—This area trains students as auto body repairmen, bricklayers, carpenters, mason helpers, construction workers, carpet layers, plumbers, sheetmetal workers, and welders. (10 hr./wk., 2 wks.) PV010. Phase-Out Orientation—Preparation of a student to look for employment. Materials and techniques are developed during the course to help the student when interviewing for a job. The student will prepare a resume, and participation in a simulated interview situation. Instructions will also be given on how to develop job leads. (10 hours total) EXPLORATORY VOCATIONAL SKILLS Since students entering the Skills Center are not always certain about their vocational goals they are provided assistance in selecting occupational training. The initial step in this direction is for the students to enroll in Exploratory Vocational Orientation, whereupon they are able to explore the different kinds of skills needed for vocational training. COURSES OF INSTRUCTION PV001. Exploratory Vocational Orientation—This is a short term orientation intended to expose students to all basic tasks involved in different kinds of occupations. The objective here is to make students aware of potential jobs, required skills for these jobs, and training available at the Skills Center. It will also help students (and their counselors) to realize their interests and abilities so that they can choose occupations and AUTOMOTIVE The objective of the automotive program is to make a student employable at an entry level. He will study those systems that are basic to the maintenance of the automobile. COURSES OF INSTRUCTION PV021. Automotive Fuel Systems—Carburetion on gas engines, and basic introduction to fuel injection systems on gas engines. Theory operation, trouble-shooting and maintenance. (30/6 wks.) PV023.
