Show Education — Secondary Education Education — Secondary Education The teaching major and minor should be in subjects taught in Utah public secondary schools. Either the major or minor must be a subject which Utah secondary schools are required to teach (those marked with an asterisk do not satisify this second requirement—see below). TEACHING MAJORS AND MINORS Art Music Botany Physical Education Chemistry Physics English Political Science French -Psychology Geography Sociology German Spanish History Zoology Mathematics MINORS ONLY ^Instructional Media Reading Economics Speech Health Education Theatre Arts ^Photography These major and minor requirements are described in the catalog under the departments offering them. COMPOSITE TEACHING MAJORS In lieu of the major and minor, a candidate may elect a composite teaching major which consists of a minimum of sixty- two hours of subjects in closely related fields. The composite major does not require an accompanying minor. In many cases the requirements of the composite major may include courses which are also used to satisfy general education requirements. The following are composite majors with their requirements: Life Science Composite Teaching Major The Life Science Composite Teaching Major must complete a minimum of 62 quarter hours in the life sciences in addition to the requirements in the physical sciences, state certification and graduation requirements. The required courses have been selected to give the student a broad background in the biological disciplines as well as minimal training in the physical sciences. The courses required for the Life Science Composite Teaching Major are: Botany 110, 112, 361 or 362; Microbiology 111; Zoology 201, 211, 212, 330, 381; Botany 345 or Zoology 440 or 445; Botany 320 or Zoology 420 or 421; two credits of seminar selected from the Botany, Microbiology or Zoology Departments; Chemistry 111, 112, 113, or 121, 122, 123; Geology 111 and 112 or 122; Physics 101 and Mathematics 105 or 106. Substitutions of equivalent credits or deviations from the above requirements must be approved by the adviser. Recommended electives may be selected from the following: Botany 310, 322, 350, 415; Zoology 372, 380, 464, 468. It is strongly recommended that the students take more advanced courses in mathematics, physics, and chemistry, especially if they plan on graduate studies beyond the bachelor of science degree. Music Education Composite Teaching Major The Music Education Composite Teaching Major is recommended for prospective secondary school music educators and consists of a minimum of 80 quarter hours in four areas as listed below. Requirements may be modified to meet individual needs. Music Theory: Music 110, 111, 112, 210, 211, 212, 379 380; and either Music 410, 411 or Music 412, 413 29 hours 278 279 |
