Show Allied Health Sciences — Respiratory Therapy Allied Health Sciences — Dental Assisting the use of respiratory therapy procedures. Two 4-hour laboratories and one 4-hour clinical rotation a week. Administration of Oxygen and Other Gases—A survey of the physiological conditions for which the administration of oxygen and other gases is useful; including appropriate equipment and techniques. One 4-hour laboratory and one 4-hour clinical rotation a week. Su (6) 202. Humidification and Aerosolization—The study of humidity and the use of therapeutic aerosols in the aid and supportive treatment of the pulmonary patient; including appropriate equipment and techniques. One 4-hour laboratory a week. Su (5) 204. Respiration—The essentials of ventilation as it applies to the assistance and/or control of respiratory function during states of impaired breathing. One 4-hour laboratory a week. A (5) 206. Mechanical Ventilation—A description of, and learning experiences with, modern day respirators and breathing devices. Taught concurrently with Respiratory Therapy 204. One 4-hour laboratory a week. A (4) 208. Elementary Cardiopulmonary Technology—Pulmonary function studies and blood gas analysis. Two 4-hour laboratories a week. W (6) 210. Equipment and Maintenance—A survey of the equipment and apparatus used by the respiratory therapist in a modern hospital; including decontamination procedures inventory systems and trouble shooting. One 4-hour laboratory a week. 286. Clinical Applications—Experience in the clinical settings of emergency, medicine, obstetrics, pediatrics, general and thoracic surgery, and neurosurgery units of an affiliated hospital. One 4-hour clinical and two 8-hour clinical rotations a week. A (7) 287. Clinical Applications (continued)—One 4-hour clinical rotation and two 8-hour clinical rotations a week. W (7) 289. Clinical Applications (continued)—One 4-hour clinical rotation and four 8-hour clinical rotations a week. S (7) 299. Seminar—Current concepts in Respiratory Therapy and review of interesting clinical studies. S (2) 386. Neonatal Respiratory Care—A special clinical applications class in the care of the newborn and premature infant. The course is taught completely at the Intermountain Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Attendance by permission only. An enrollment prerequisite of at least 59 previous Respiratory Therapy credit hours is required. TBA four 4-hour clinical rotations. (5) DENTAL ASSISTING Robert C. Soderberg, Director The Department conducts a Dental Assisting Program in cooperation with Hill Air Force Base. The curriculum is designed to prepare competent and adaptable dental assistants by providing a broad and varied clinical experience at Hill Air Force Base Dental Clinic. A separate application for the Dental Assisting Program is required. For details regarding the application procedure, prospective candidates must contact the office of the Program Director. There are two entering classes, of approximately 12 students each, that will be accepted every year. The first class begins fall quarter and the second begins spring quarter. It is necessary to have all application materials filed with the Program Director at least two weeks prior to the start of each appropriate quarter. To be eligible for consideration into the Dental Assisting Program, a condidate must: 1. Make application to Weber State College, take the ACT test, and be accepted as a general student in good standing. 2. Submit transcripts of high school grades or grades from any college, technical school, or post secondary institutions, to the School of Allied Health Sciences. 3. Have successfully achieved an ACT score of 15 or greater. Particular attention will be given to the scores obtained in the Natural Science section. 4. Take a Stromberg Dexterity Test given at the Counseling and Testing Center on the Weber State College campus. 5. File a completed Dental Assisting application, forms for which may be obtained from the Department of Health Occupations. The program is three quarters in length, and consists of one quarter at the Weber State College campus and two quarters at the Hill Air Force Base Dental Clinic. Dental Assisting 412 413 |
