Show Arts, Letters and Science — English Arts, Letters and Science — English The student should consult the Theatre Arts Department for the remaining requirements in the composite major program. It is also recommended that where feasible the student take foreign language courses offering readings in the drama; French 313, 431; German 202, 313, 440, 442, 460; Spanish 203, 416, 417. English and Communication Composite Teaching Major— In lieu of the usual major-minor requirement, the Department of English in consultation with the Department of Communication offers a composite major with a minimum emphasis in either English or Communication. With either emphasis students may choose a bachelor of arts or a bachelor of science program. Students interested in this teaching degree may complete their requirements by taking 45 credit hours in their primary area of interest and 35 credit hours in their supporting area of interest. A student electing English as either his major or supporting area must complete the following core of requirements, totaling 23 hours: Grammar: English 223 or 324; Linguistics or Language: English 381 or 383; Composition: one of English 321, 325, 326, 327, or 328; Critical analysis: English 326; American literature: one of English 451, 452, 453, 454; English literature: one of English 461, 462, 463, 464, 465, or 466; Eminent writers: English 371; Senior seminar: English 499. The student electing English as his supporting field must take additional hours in English, totaling 35. The student electing English as his major field must take additional hours, totaling 45. The student should consult the Department of Communication for the remaining requirements in this composite teaching major. English Departmental Minor— An English departmental minor must complete at least 20 hours of approved work in English. The following courses are required of an English departmental minor: English 236, preferably during the freshman or sophomore years; one of the three courses: English 321, 325, 328; one of the following four courses: English 451, 452, 453, 454; one of the following six courses : English 461, 462, 463, 464, 465, 466. The following courses are recommended: English 367, 368 or 369, 371, 374, 382, 383, 475. English Teaching Minor—An English teaching minor must complete at least 28 hours of approved work in English. He must take all courses required for an English departmental minor and must take English 223 or 324 before taking student teaching. Courses acceptable for English Credit—The following courses only are acceptable as English credit toward graduation for majors and minors: English 223, 225, 235, 236, 321, 324, 325, 326, 327, 328, 329, 330, 331, 341, 342, 343, 350, 355, 358, 360, 367, 368, 369, 370, 371, 373, 374, 381, 382, 383, 388, 451 452, 453, 454, 461, 462, 463, 464, 465, 466, 475, 483, 492, 499. Lower division courses 251, 252, 253 are not recommended for English majors and minors because they duplicate required courses 451, 452, 453, 454. Lower division courses 261, 262 are not recommended for English majors and minors because they duplicate required upper division courses 461, 462, 463, 464, 465, 466. Asian Studies Minor Program—The Department of English participates in the Asian Studies Minor Program. A student who wishes to participate in the program should indicate his desire to do so with the departmental Asian Studies representative, Dr. Candadai Seshachari, who will help the student work out a proper combination of courses to fit his particular needs. Scholarship—"D" grade English credit may not be applied towards graduation requirements for English majors and English minors. 100. English Essentials—Review of grammar, punctuation, and basic sentence style. AWS (3) 101. English Composition—Organization and style: Emphasis on the formulation of thesis statement; unity, coherence, and development of the paragraph; and review of the mechanics of effective style. A W S (3) 102. English Composition—Critical thinking and methods of library research: Emphasis on critical thinking and writing combined with library research and documentation. AWS (3) 103. English Composition — Writing in the disciplines: Divided into 103A (social sciences and humanities), 103B (applied sciences), and 103C (exact sciences); this course assists the student with researching, reading, and writing on current topics related to the student's area of interest and directs the student's compositional efforts toward his collegiate and occupational needs.
