Show Arts, Letters and Science — Theatre Arts Arts, Letters and Science — Theatre Arts DEPARTMENT OF THEATRE ARTS John M. Elzey, Chairman Professors, John M. Elzey, T. Leonard Rowley; Assistant Professors, Jerry D. Allen; Instructor, Scott L. Jensen. The Department of Theatre Arts establishes as its objectives the following: 1. To encourage a discriminative understanding and appreciation of the theatre through study of, and participation in significant drama. 2. To prepare students who have a major or a minor academic interest in theatre arts to become (a) creative and well-trained teachers; (b) sensitive and disciplined artists who can make a living in the theatre; (c) advanced scholars capable of research and significant scholarly achievement. 3. To expose students of the department to a wide range of theories and philosophies and to present to the student body and to the community the best in ancient and modern theatre which explores these great theories and philosophies, challenges conventional thinking and stimulates investigation and evaluation of these concepts. 4. To encourage creativity by offering practical experience in all fields of the theatre, including acting, directing, management, and original work in design and playwriting. 5. To develop a growing interest in the theatre by offering young people experience in Creative Dramatics, Children's Theatre, and appropriate adult productions. 6. To encourage community participation in theatre. BACCALAUREATE DEGREE REQUIREMENTS The Department of Theatre Arts requires all departmental majors to take the bachelor of arts degree. Prospective teachers may select either the bachelor of arts or the bachelor of science degree. In addition, majors must complete between 45 and 60 hours of satisfactory work in Theatre Arts. No "D" grade in Theatre Arts course will be approved toward graduation with a major or minor in Theatre Arts. Several types of majors are offered: A departmental major in Theatre Arts and several options for prospective secondary education teachers. Departmental majors may follow one of three different programs: (1) Pre-professional emphasis in performance (acting and directing), (2) Pre-professional emphasis in production (technical and design) or (3) General Theatre program. Theatre Arts Departmental Major—Students majoring in Theatre Arts must complete the following courses: Performance Emphasis, Theatre Arts 111, 112, 113, 114, 115, 116, 117, 201, 212, 213, 225, 241, 312, 313, 315, 401, 411, 412, 415, 499, plus 5 hours of theatre electives. Production Emphasis, Theatre Arts 111, 112, 113, 114, 115, 116, 117, 225, 241, 243, 245, 341, 343, 351, 354, 355, 401, 499, plus 8 hours of theatre electives. General Theatre Major, Theatre Arts 111, 112, 113, 114, 115, 116, 117, 201, 212, 213, 225, 241, 343, 351, 401, 411, 412, 415, 499, plus 5 hours of theatre arts electives. Theatre Arts Departmental Minor—Students minoring in Theatre Arts must complete the following courses: Theatre Arts 111, 112, 113, 114, 115, 116, 117, 225, 241 or 343, 411, plus theatre electives to total 30 hours. Minors must participate in at least two Weber State Theatre productions before graduation is approved. It is to the advantage of minors to begin their programs during the freshman year, and a minor adviser from the Department of Theatre Arts should be assigned no later than the end of the sophomore year. Theatre Arts Teaching Major—Students taking the teaching major in Theatre Arts must complete the following courses in Theatre Arts: Theatre Arts 111, 112, 113, 114, 115, 116, 117, 201, 212, 213, 225, 241, 343, 351, 401, 411, 412, 415, 471, and 499. Theatre Arts and English Teaching Major with Theatre Emphasis (No minor is required with this major)—Students taking the composite teaching major in Theatre Arts and English with a Theatre Arts Emphasis must complete the following courses: Theatre Arts 111, 112, 113, 114, 115, 116, 117, 225, 241, 315, 343, 411, 412, 420, 471, and a choice of either Theatre Arts 401 or a combination of 415 and two hours of Theatre Arts electives.
