Show Business and Economics — Data Processing Business and Economics — Data Processing COURSES OF INSTRUCTION 101. Concepts and Applications of Data Processing—A general course designed to develop an appreciation and understanding of computer capabilities including; social implications of computing, data processing functions, computer application and use in business and industry, data preparation, flowcharting and stored-program logic; experience in computer problem-solving using a problem-oriented programming language and exposure to terminal usage. Designed for the student having no prior data processing experience. AWS (4) 120. R.P.G. Programming—Basic computer programming concepts and development techniques. Program development and problem solution using IBM Report Program Generator. Oriented to commercial data processing problems. Prerequisite : Data Processing 101, or permission of instructor. Two lectures and 2 hours laboratory a week. W S (3) 140. Fortran IV Programming for Business—Application of the FORTRAN IV computer programming language for the solution of business problems using the computer. Prerequisites: Data Processing 101 and Math 105. Three lectures. A S (3) 160. COBOL Programming—Introduction to COBOL programming language. Program development techniques oriented to commercial data processing problems. Prerequisites: Data Processing 101 or permission of instructor. Two lectures and 2 hours of laboratory a week. A W (3) 190. Computer Architecture—A fundamental course designed to explore the specific physical and functional characteristics of computer memories and storage devices, control units, arithmetic and logic units, and input/output devices. Topics include data representation and number systems, word-oriented and coincident addressable primary storage; local storage and machine cycle; automatic interrupt systems; program status words; software and hardware interface; communication channel concepts. Directed to the IBM S/360-370. Prerequisite: Data Processing 101 and one Programming language. Four lectures. A W (4) 201. Direct Access Storage Devices and File Design Concepts—The structure and function of direct access storage devices and the techniques of file design and organization. Prerequisite: Data Processing 190. A W (3) 210. Operating Systems—An applied course in the concepts, techniques, and use of operating systems involving job management, task management, and data management for computers with multiprocessing capabilities. Topics include the function and organization of supervisors and monitors, assemblies and compilers, linkage editors, libraries, utilities and service programs; system generation; and job control language. Directed to the IBM System/360-370. Prerequisites: Data Processing 190 and 201. Three lectures and 2 hours of laboratory a week. W (4) 250. PL/1 Programming—Applied concepts of programming computeis with the PL/1 programming language. Prerequisites : Math 105, Data Processing 101 and one of Data Processing 140, 160, or 260. Two lectures and 2 hours of laboratory a week. W (3) 260. FORTRAN IV Programming for the Sciences—Applied concepts of scientific programming with the FORTRAN IV Programming language. Prerequisite: Math 107. Two lectures and 2-hours of laboratory a week. AWS (3) 280. Introduction to Assembler Language Programming— Basic concepts of computer programming with the IBM S/360- 370 Assembler Language. Prerequisite: Data Processing 190. Three lectures and 2 hours of laboratory a week. W S (4) 301. Data Processing for Teachers of Secondary Education—A course designed to instruct secondary education teachers in the concepts of data flow, program logic and data processing applied to electronic data processing equipment, and methods of teaching data processing. Credit cannot be applied toward the major or minor in Data Processing. Su (5) 305. Systems Design—Data Processing systems development, design, and management procedures. Development and design of systems and procedures for commercial data processing. Topics include forms design and application design; charting; scheduling, internal control and operations management techniques. Prerequisites: Data Processing 101 and a programming language. A S (4) 340. Computer System—An in-depth study for comparison and evaluation of the various types of computer equipment. Prerequisite: Data Processing 305. One lecture. W (2) 350.
