Show Allied Health Sciences — Dental Assisting Allied Health Sciences — Nursing students are involved in lectures, demonstrations, laboratory sessions, and clinical experiences in all phases of dentistry. Students who successfully complete the program are awarded a Certificate of Completion from Weber State College. To become a Certified Dental Assistant, a student must be a graduate of an American Dental Association accredited program. Weber State College's Dental Assisting Program has submitted to the American Dental Association Council on Dental Education an application for accreditation. This does not affect a graduate's ability to obtain employment as a dental assistant. The following courses are required before a student may receive a Certificate of Completion in Dental Assisting: English 100 or English 101, Psychology SS101, Office Administration 101 (Typewriting), Health Occupations 120. COURSES OF INSTRUCTION 100. Orientation to Dental Science—Introduction to dental assisting in the profession of dentistry. A(l) 105. Psychology and General Anatomy—Survey of human physiology and anatomy to dental practice. A(2) 110. Microbiology and Sterilization—Microorganisms as agents of infection and sterilization of instruments and supplies. A(2) 115. Pharmacology and Nutrition—Study of common drugs and dietary considerations in dental practice. A(l) 120. Histology and Pathology—Introduction to the structural elements, "tissues and organs" and their involvement in the disease process. A(l) 125. Oral Anatomy—Growth and development of oral structure, tooth form and function. A(3) 130. Emergency Care—First Aid and emergency care in dental office. A(l) 135. Dental Materials — Identification, characteristics, and techniques in the use of commonly available dental materials. A(3) 140. Dental Office Management—Essentials in efficient office management, patient records, supplies and inventory. A(2) 145. Patient Education and Public Health—Dental assisting as applied to patient education and public health. A(l) 150. Dental Instruments and Equipment—Identification, nomenclature, use and care of instruments and equipment. A(3) 155. X-Ray Theory and Practicum—Lectures and clinical experience in taking, processing, identification, and filing of radiographs. A(3) 160. Prosthetic Laboratory Procedures—Fabrication of dental laboratory materials. A(3) 165. Chairside Assisting, Operative Dentistry—Clinical experience. A(3) 170. Chairside Assisting, Endodonics, Orthodonics—Clinical experience. A (2) 175. Chairside Assisting, Oral Surgery—Clinical experience.
