Show Services Museums until 7 p.m., Monday and Tuesday of each week. During the first week of the quarter the bookstore is open from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m., Monday through Thursday. BUILDINGS AND GROUNDS SERVICE For the student's classwork and activities the College provides an adequate physical plant and a buildings and grounds staff which maintain an environment that is comfortable, healthful and wholesome. The office of Campus Planning and Construction provides master planning and other architectural service for the campus. COMMUNITY SERVICES Weber State College recognizes its role as a participant in the total community and strives to fulfill its responsibilities as a participant. The College's faculty and staff serve on boards and committees within the community setting. The College, through Continuing Education, offers services and facilities in planning and implementing conferences and institutes. Evening and off-campus offerings are designed to meet the academic interest needs of both degree and non-degree persons. Other areas of service in Continuing Education include special vocational and adult basic education programs, consultation in community-related problems, and research. The Office of College Development will assist requesting groups and organizations in securing program speakers from the faculty and staff of the college when possible. MUSEUMS Weber State College Museum of Natural History is located on the main floor of the Science Hall Building. Exhibits represent the various areas of interest from the science departments as organized under the direction of the museum director. The museum is an excellent educational facility for all visitors. In addition to Weber State College students, hundreds of elementary and secondary school children visit the museum regularly. Items of interest include dinosaur skeletons, rock and mineral displays, aquaria, dioramas, displays of plant and animal evolution and adaptations and a remote sensing weather station. The museum is open all year except for holidays. Zoology Museum—A large collection of mammals, birds, amphibia, reptiles, insects, and other animals is maintained by the Department of Zoology. Numerous species from Utah and western states are included in the collection. Frequent field trips to selected desert and mountain regions constantly augment the specimens used for study. Botany Herbarium—The herbarium of Weber State College is a rapidly growing collection of plant and library materials. At present, this collection contains some 12,000 preserved plant specimens collected primarily from areas throughout the western states. These plants and the literature provide a valuable source of reference material for the faculty, capable students, and visiting botanists. Geology Repository—The repository consists of study collections of minerals, rocks, fossils, and maps and is located on the third floor of the Science Laboratory Building. It includes a mineral collection of about a thousand micromount crystals, thumbnail, hand, and museum specimens and about 700 identified Utah ore minerals and rock specimens. The paleontologi- cal portion of the repository consists of several thousand specimens of fossil plants and animals from all parts of the stratigraphic column and many parts of the world. The map collection contains many maps of Utah and most other parts of the world. Although the collections are primarily for the support and supplement of classes and laboratories, they also are available for study by qualified amateur and professional researchers under the direction of the department faculty. PLANETARIUM A planetarium featuring a 30 ft. hemispherical dome and and Spitz A-4 planetarium projector is located in the Science Lecture Building. At present, this installation is one of few such facilities in the intermountain area. The facility is used primarily in class instruction in astronomy classes. In addition, a program featuring some phase of astronomy is given once each week which is open to students and the general public. SECURITY AND TRAFFIC The Office of Campus Police is a protective agency established for the benefit of the students, faculty, visitors and 78 79 |
