Show Arts, Letters and Science — Foreign Languages by relating foreign cultures and languages to the student's own language and culture; (3) give the student exposure of knowledge in and experiences with the various aesthetic modes of expression in art, music, drama, and literature. 2. To prepare departmental minors. 3. To prepare teaching minors. 4. To prepare departmental majors. These are students who are going into government work, international business, public relations, etc. 5. To prepare teaching majors. These are students who will eventually teach either on the elementary, secondary, junior college, college, or university level. The Department of Foreign Languages offers a bachelor of arts degree in the French, German, and Spanish languages. Activities: Weber State College Region Two Foreign Language Festival, March-April, 1975. Travel-Study tours of foreign countries sponsored by the Weber State College Department of Foreign Languages. The Department of Foreign Languages sponsors French, German, and Spanish language clubs. Attendance in the language laboratory for a minimum of two hours a week is required of all first year foreign language students. Placement with High School Training in Languages—A student entering a foreign language class with high school foreign language training may take a placement examination or demonstrate in some other satisfactory manner his knowledge of the subject for placement in a more advanced class. No more than 15 equivalent college credits earned in high school may be applied towards the bachelor of arts foreign language requirement. Special Examination—Students proficient in a language which is not their native language who have had foreign residence may obtain a maximum of 24 hours of credit by doing one of the following: (1) pass a special examination, if previous credit at this level has not been allowed or(2) have the 24 hours for the bachelor of arts degree waived by earning a "C" grade Arts, Letters and Science — French or better in an upper division language class.* Students with a minimum of three years of high school language may (1) receive from five to fifteen hours of credit by passing this examination or (2) have waived 15 hours of credit toward the bachelor of arts degree by earning a "C" grade or better in a class numbered in the 200's.* Application for the special examination for credit is to be made at the office of the Department of Foreign Languages. 'Travel Studies courses 209 and 309 do not apply. ASIAN STUDIES MINOR PROGRAM The Department of Foreign Languages participates in the Asian Studies minor program. A student who wishes to participate should indicate his desire to do so with the departmental Asian Studies representative who will help the student work out a proper combination of courses to fit his particular needs. Scholarship—A "D" grade in any upper division course will not be accepted in the language major or minor. FRENCH French Major-—^Students majoring in French are required to take 36 to 40 hours of upper division credit. The following numbered courses are required: 304, 305, 306, 311, 312, 313, and 330. Additional courses may be chosen from the following numbered courses: 302, 309, 401, 420, 421, 431, 441, 451, 471 483, and 499. French Minor*—Students minoring in French are required to take 18 hours of upper division credit which must include the following numbered courses: 304, 305, 306, 311, 312, and 313. French Teaching Major*—A French teaching major must complete the program outlined above for French majors and must also take 340 which must be completed prior to commence- ing student teaching or similar training. French Teaching Minor*—A French teaching minor must complete the program outlined above for French minors, and in addition must take 330 and 340. The latter course must be *Majors and minors are required to take the courses numbered 201, 202, 203, 214, 215 and 216 or their equivalent, except those students with foreign residence. 136 137 |
