Show Arts, Letters and Science — German Arts, Letters and Science — German GERMAN German Major*—Students majoring in German are required to take 36 to 40 hours of upper division credit. The following numbered courses are required: 304, 305, 306, 311, 312, 313 and 330. Additional courses may be chosen from the following numbered courses: 300, 302, 309, 401, 419, 440, 442, 444, 460, 463, 470, 483 and 499. German Minor*—Students minoring in German are required to take 18 hours of upper division credit which must include the following numbered courses: 304, 305, 306, 311, 312, and 313. German Teaching Major*—A German teaching major must complete the program outlined above for German majors and must also take 340 which must be completed prior to commencing student teaching or similar training. German Teaching Minor*—A German Teaching minor must complete the program outlined above for German minors, and in addition must take 330 and 340. The latter course must be completed prior to commencing student teaching or similar training. COURSES OF INSTRUCTION 101, 102, 103. First Year German—Listening and speaking skills receive primary emphasis, although reading and writing are an integral part of the program. Courses are sequential, and the previous course is a prerequisite. Five lectures and two 1- hour laboratory periods a week. AWS (5-5-5) HU201, HU202. Second Year German—Grammar and composition of intermediate level and progressively advanced reading from well-known authors. Continued emphasis on listening and speaking skills. Prerequisite: German 103 or equivalent. AW (5-5) 209. Travel and Study Abroad—Language, culture, and history of German-speaking countries taught in Europe by members of the Weber State College faculty during summer tours arranged by the Foreign Language Department. Su (3) HU214. Conversational German—Intensive development of oral expression and active vocabulary through pronunciation "Majors and minors are required to take the courses numbered 201, 202 and 300, or their equivalent, except those students with foreign residence. drills, controlled discussions on subjects of current interest, and oral practice on assigned topics, vocabulary idioms, and cultural items. Prerequisite: German 103 or equivalent. S (2) 300. Introduction to Reading of Literary Texts—Reading and discussion of German literary works in the various genres. Prerequisite: German 202 or equivalent. S (3) HU302. Culture and Civilization—History, geography, art, social customs and contemporary civilization of Germany, Switzerland and Austria. Prerequisite: Two years of college German or the equivalent. W (3) HU304, HU305, HU306. Third Year German—Intensive study of grammar, syntax, stylistics and composition and their application. Courses are sequential, and it is recommended that they be taken in order. Prerequisites : German 202 or the consent of the instructor AWS (3-3-3) 309. Travel and Study Abroad—Language, culture and history of German speaking countries taught in Europe by members of the Weber State College faculty during summer tours arranged by the Foreign Language Department. Amount of credit offered for the course will vary according to the length of the tour. Su (3) HU311, HU312, HU313. Introduction to German Literature— A general view of literary periods, movements and social background, with representative readings. (It is recommended that courses 304, 305, and 306 be taken previous to or simultaneously with this course.) Prerequisites: German 300 or consent of the instructor. (Offered alternate years.) AWS (3-3-3) 330. German Phonetics—An advanced course in the principles of German phonetics, analysis and correction of faulty pronunciation, and techniques of teaching German phonetics for teaching majors and minors. Prerequisites: German 202 or consent of the instructor. (Offered alternate years.) W (2) 340. Methods of Teaching Foreign Languages—A practical course in up-to-date techniques in teaching foreign languages. Must be taken prior to commencing student teaching or similar training. Recommended for third year. Prerequisites: German 202 or the consent of the instructor. S (3) 401 Senior Year Language Studies—Advanced studies in grammar, composition, translation and linguistics. Prerequisites : 304, 305 and 306. (Offered alternate years.) A (3) 140 141 |
