Show Education — Teacher Education Education — Teacher Education junior and senior standing. Students will be permitted to take professional courses during the latter part of the sophomore year, but not more than two courses required for certification will be permitted in a student's first 90 credit hours of college work. To meet certification requirements, secondary school candidates are required to complete a minimum of 33 quarter hours of professional course work; 42 quarter hours are required of the prospective elementary school teacher. An outline summary of the requirements for graduation and certification for either elementary or secondary school teachers may be obtained from the School of Education on request. PROGRAMS IN THE TEACHING OF READING The school of Education offers course work in the area of reading and study skills improvement. Courses in this area may be used to satisfy requirements for either an academic concentration for Elementary Education majors or an academic minor for students in Secondary Education. These programs were developed in response to the growing demand for teachers with specialized training in reading. The preparation covers instructional methods, materials selection, diagnostic procedures, and curriculum design for teaching reading at both the remedial and developmental levels. This endorsement establishes the holder as a specialist in the field, and qualifies him to be employed in this field at any level from kindergarten through twelfth grade. The following courses (which may also be used, where appropriate, to satisfy requirements for the concentration or the minor) are required for the Learning Disabilities Endorsement: Education 300, 321 or 325, 460, 465, 466, 467, 486 (six hours minimum), 340 (secondary only). INSTRUCTIONAL MEDIA MINOR A revised program for the Instructional Media Minor is under development to satisfy the new state standards for the Instructional Media Endorsement. Completion of this program will qualify the applicant for the Basic Professional Certificate in Instructional Media, which combined with a valid Basic Professional (Teacher's) Certificate qualifies the holder for classification as a media specialist for assignment in the public schools. The program is also provided as preparation for personnel in business, industry, public libraries, and for graduate study. The Instructional Media Minor is organized in modular form to permit individual progress and scheduling flexibility. INDIVIDUALIZED PERFORMANCE-BASED TEACHER EDUCATION PROGRAM Beginning with the autumn quarter of 1970, all students working toward teacher certificates in both elementary and secondary education began course work in the Individualized Performance-based Teacher Education Program (IPT). This program was designed as a response to the need for a greater relevance in teacher education. Students are no longer involved in a class attendance requirement for the bulk of the work in teacher education, but are rather permitted to proceed at their )wn rate through the use of instructional units called WILKITs I Weber Individualized Learning Kits).
