Introductory Reading—Designed to teach basic reading skills beginning with alphabetical sounds and advancing through simple reading selection. (1-9) BE095. Vocational Reading—Organized to increase reading skills. Oriented toward the individual's vocation. Comprehension is stressed. (1-9) BE096. Fundamental Writing—Concentration on developing writing skills from the alphabet to simple sentences. (1-9) BE097. Techniques in Composition—Development of basic writing skills with stress on grammar and spelling. (1-9) AREA OF OFFICE OCCUPATION Roietta Goodwin, Supervisor This program is offered to students preparing to enter the field of Office Administration and Business Education. The intent of the course is to prepare the student for entry level employment or entry into regular coursework. Training is provided for the following job titles: General Clerk, Transcribing Machine Operator, Typist, Clerk-Typist, Stenographer, and General Office Clerk. COURSES OF INSTRUCTION 00054. Basic Typewriting Skills—Development of sustained typing power, control of figures and symbols, improvement of techniques. A speed of at least 30 words per minute should be attained. (1-5) 00055. Applied Typewriting Skills—Review of keyboard, business letters, tabulated reports, improvement of basic skills and intensive speed building. A speed of at least 40 words per minute should be attained. (1-5) 00056. Production Typewriting — Manuscripts, special drills in letter arrangement and business forms. A speed of 50 words per minute should be attained. (1-5) 00057. Hy-Speed Shorthand—A method of fast writing based on the English alphabet; abbreviations, omissions, and blending letters; dictation and transcription. 1-5) 00058. Business Machines—Practical experience using rotary calculators in addition, subtraction, multiplication and division in whole numbers, fractions, decimals, percents, etc. (1-9) 00059. Business English—Use of memos, letters, reports, etc., in applying the fundamental principles of effective business communication. (1-5) OO060. Office Procedures—Practical integration in all secretarial skills, training in office techniques, organization, and routine. (1-9) OO068. Record Keeping - Bookkeeping—Classification of accounts, interpretation of accounting data and of financial records as related to top-level secretarial work, employer's personal record keeping, payroll, petty cash, income tax reports, budgets, and notes. (1-9) 00071. Gregg Shorthand I—Introduction to theory of Gregg Shorthand system with emphasis upon reading and writing fluently. (1-5) 00072. Gregg Shorthand II—Use of the entire shorthand theory in practice dictation. A speed of at least 70 words per minute should be attained. (1-5) 00074. OJT Training—Practical experience in secretarial skills, actual on-the-job training as a "student secretary." (1-9) 00075. Office Machines—Practical experience in the use of dictaphone, duplicating machines and Xerox copiers. (1-9) 00076. Human Relations and Personal Development—Designed to help students develop insight into what is involved in good human relations in the ofice and to develop the personal qualities necessary for good human relations. (1-9) 00077. Office Simulation—Application of those basic clerical skills in a real office situation under simulated conditions. Practice in filing, handling mail, and the operation of office telephone systems. (1-9) OO081. Filing—Basic principles of office organization and filing techniques. Reviews different methods of filing procedures. (1-5) OO083. Business Communications—Review and application of oral and written communications including executive dictation to secretaries and machines, and the correct procedures for business report writing.
