Show Marriott-Slaterville History January 1 - December 31, 2012 With unbelievable speed, another busy, eventful year concluded (2011), and a new year was here, bringing new opportunities, concerns, problems, successes, happy occasions, and chances for improvement. The January 2012 issue of The Pioneer Post, noted that it was Issue 1 of Volume XIV. What changes we have witnessed in what has really seemed a very short time since our incorporation! From the Mayor Mayor Keith Butler reported the "State of the City" in the January 2012 issue of The Pioneer Post, telling us that the City is working hard to make life better in our community. He commended the effort and resources which went into the spring flooding during 2011, and how neighbors united in working together--we have great volunteers. From the Easter Egg Hunt to the Breakfast with Santa, we enjoyed great activities. The past year saw the completion of the 400 North Reconstruction Project, improvements on 1200 West and western Pioneer Road. There were park improvements at Marriott Park and Mill Creek entryway. He looked forward to dedicating two new river trail bridges and connecting another mile of trail to the river trail system. Also new businesses were opening on 2000 West and on 12th Street. Mayor Keith Butler's Christmas Message in the December 2012 issue of The Pioneer Post, as he wished all of us a wonderful holiday season, confirmed continued good things in our city: no community debt, no city property tax, neighbors helping neighbors, good businesses, our community gardens, and all of the great volunteers. Again, activities such as the Easter Egg Hunt, the Fourth of July Celebration, Breakfast with Santa, and Trunk-or-Treat have brought fun to the community. The latter has become so large it will be necessary to make some changes next year for this event. The Wheels of Government Important in this technological age, the City website is up and the city is also on Facebook. The city government continued to function under the able and conservative Mayor, City Administrator, staff, City Council and Planning Commission. The first matter of business at the January 19, 2012, City Council Meeting was the administering of the Oath of Office to Dennis Illum, Scott VanLeeuwen and Rob Smout, the councilmen commencing a new term. It was administered by City Administrator Bill Morris. Councilman Kim Slater moved to suspend the rules and elect Dennis Illum as Council President and Scott VanLeeuwen as Vice-president for 2012, which was seconded by Councilman Rob Smout. The vote on the motion was unanimous in favor. Mayor Keith Butler asked the consent of the City Council to appoint Kim Slater to the Mosquito Abatement Board, where he currently serves. Consent was granted unanimously. An important staff change occurred on June 4, 2012. Ken Martin resigned as the City Inspector, and Trent Meyerhoffer was named City Inspector, in addition to his current responsibilities. At the December 20, 2012, City Council Meeting, the 2013 meeting schedule was approved. |
