Show WHAT IS TYPE 2 DIABETES? WHAT IS GESTATIONAL DIABETES? Type 2 diabetes usually occurs gradually when either the cells do not use insulin properly (insulin resistance) and/or the pancreas does not produce enough insulin (insulin deficiency). Type 2 diabetes is treated with a combination of meal planning, exercise, oral medications, and/or insulin. Almost 90 to 95 percent of Americans with diabetes have type 2. Type 2 Diabetes Gestational diabetes develops only during pregnancy. Pregnancy hormones make it more difficult for insulin to move glucose into the cell. Gestational diabetes is treated with meal planning, exercise, possible oral medications, and/or insulin. Blood glucose levels usually return to normal after the delivery of the baby, but the mother has an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes in the future. There is also a greater chance of developing gestational diabetes with future pregnancies. WHAT IS PRE-DIABETES? Individuals with pre-diabetes have blood glucose levels that are higher than normal but not high enough for the diagnosis of diabetes. If left untreated, there is a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes in the future.
