Show BLOOD GLUCOSE Blood glucose, also know as blood sugar, is the main source of fuel for the body. The body breaks down food into glucose. It is then absorbed into the bloodstream where it is used by the cells for growth and energy. When blood glucose levels rise, the body sends a signal to the pancreas to release a hormone called insulin. WHAT IS INSULIN? Insulin is the key that unlocks the doors of the cell, allowing glucose from the bloodstream to enter. When the body does not have enough insulin or use insulin properly, blood glucose levels rise and may cause diabetes. Normal Process Type 1 Diabetes WHAT IS TYPE 1 DIABETES? In type 1 diabetes, the pancreas stops or nearly stops making insulin. The body's immune system attacks and destroys the beta cells of the pancreas, responsible for producing insulin. Type 1 diabetes usually develops in children but can occur at any age. Insulin injections must be given several times a day to survive. About five to ten percent of Americans with diabetes have type 1. Symptoms of high blood glucose levels are listed below: • Frequent urination • Excessive thirst • Extreme hunger • Unusual weight loss • Increased fatigue • Irritability • Blurry vision • Numbness and tingling in the hands and/or feet • Frequent infections or cuts and sores that are slow to heal selecthealth 89 Intermountain McKay-Dee Hospital Center |
