Show The weather cooperated beautifully as a large crowd attended the annual Trunk-or-Treat at the Slaterville Park on Halloween, October 31, 2012. Set-up began at 5:00 p.m. with treats starting at 6:00 p.m. sharp, when the fire engine siren sounded. Hot dogs, donuts and pop were available with donations requested. There were 2 hot dogs remaining from the 700 cooked. The many designed trunks were amazing, the costumes ranged from beautiful to comic to scary. Prizes were awarded in several categories, including trunks, costumes and pumpkins. Winners included Kelly Aiken, Michael and Debbie Draper, Kelly Dyer, Cole Fillpot, Reid Heraldson, Malan Keller, Chelsey Knight, Ken and Dixie Little, Kent and Marsha Meyerhoffer, Katie Oman, Kelly Slater, London Slater, Jacob Taylor, and Marty Treasure. Trunk-or-Treat was a success, but different options for the next year will be reviewed. Always a fun time, Breakfast with Santa was held on December 8, 2012 from 9:00 -11:00 a.m., for a slightly smaller group, which numbered about 60 this year. On the breakfast menu were cereal, pancakes, ham, eggs, donuts, apple and orange juice and hot chocolate. Santa Claus visited and gave the children a treat. Shauna Meyerhoffer was again in charge of the event. Helpers (elves?) included DeAnn Hufstetler, JoAnn Louth, Stacee Meyerhoffer, Kent Meyerhoffer, and Glen Meyerhoffer. A Christmas party for volunteers was held at the Senior Center on December 20, 2012, following the City Council Meeting. Bella's catered the dinner, which was commended by those in attendance. Thanks especially to Becky Burt for all her work. Awards Nominations for community awards had been requested and awards were presented at the City Council Meeting held on December 20, 2012. Honored were: Myrna Meyerhoffer, Elna Lucas Community History and Cultural Award, nominated by Elna Lucas for her contribution to community history. Jaimie Aiken, H. Orvil Holley Youth Award, nominated by Orvil Holley for her part on the winning state championship softball. Randy Phipps, Darrell Mecham Outstanding Community Service Award, nominated by DeAnn Hufstetler, for many years of community service, including such events as Trunk-or-Treat. Sandra Saunders, Darrell Mecham Outstanding Community Service Award, nominated by DeAnn Hufstetler for her work in the community garden. Michael Stevenson, Good Neighbor Award, nominated by Naomi Eilers, for service such as removing snow and bringing in mail for elderly neighbors. Sherry Wadman, Good Neighbor Award, nominated by Dixie Holmes, for helping residents with her nursing skills, and bringing meals to them. Crime Surely our quiet, rural community is not involved in crime! Unfortunately, events this year show that several crime issues have arisen. In March Mayor Butler said the Strike Force entered a property on Pioneer Road on a stolen property warrant, and found many stolen items. Brian Michael Davidson, 40, was arrested for 19 felonies involving car thefts. State authorities recovered $100,000 in stolen goods, according to a Standard Examiner story on March 15, 2012. Called a "hoarder" he was charged with 21 felonies in eight cases, ranging from theft and burglary to altering VIN numbers. The cases were filed beginning in February, from four different agencies. One detective labelled him a "hoarder-thief," who takes things and then decides later what he can do with the items. 16 |
