It focused on heart disease (#1 health risk for men), cancer, respiratory disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, and suicide. It also listed screenings and seminars. A Bone Density Screening was held in our Senior Center on June 26, 2012, beginning at 11:00 a.m. The McKay-Dee hospital Senior Health Connection Newsletter for July 2012 encouraged immunizations for Seniors. One to consider is Pertussis or whooping cough. Immunity to it decreases a bit in adulthood, and adults 19 to 64 should have a Tdap shot. Those who expect to have close contact with a baby under the age of 1, (including those over 64) should have the Tdap to protect the babies from whooping cough. Anyone over 50 should consider the shingles vaccine to help avoid the shingles, a contagious viral infection. Choi/glucose Screening was available at the Senior Center on July 17, 2012, at 11:00 a.m. The September 2012 issue of The Pioneer Post reminded us of activities available at the Senior Center: weekly lunch on Tuesday, yoga lessons led by Carolyn Deru, Thursdays at 9:00 a.m., beginner line-dance Mondays at 9:00 a.m., intermediate line-dance Thursday, 11:00 am., a media center, as well as the City Hall Park, with bowery, playground, and municipal gardens. Flu shots were available at the Senior Center on September 25, 2012, from 11:00 a.m. to 12 noon. Cholesterol is a waxy substance that carries digested fat from your liver to where your body needs it for energy and healing. Too much in the blood can build up in the walls of arteries, which, over time, causes hardening, which slows the blood to the heart. Four areas to know are Total cholesterol, LDL, HDL, and Triglycerides. It gave levels for each. A Health Fair was held October 8, 2012, at the McKay-Dee Hospital Center, which was free for Seniors. Flu shots, blood pressure, cholesterol/glucose screenings, and body fat testing were offered. The event was free for seniors. The Senior Health Connection Newsletter tor November 2012 concerned COPD, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, a serious lung disease. It includes chronic bronchitis and emphysema. Pulmonary rehab can help improve the quality of life. An Advanced Directive seminar was held at the Senior Center on November 13, 2012, at 11:30 a.m. A Lite Lunch Seminar at McKay-Dee Hospital, on "Childhood Obesity" was announced for November 28, at noon. The Senior Health Connection Newsletter tor December 2012, dealt with depression. For most, holidays are a special time, but some, especially older adults, may feel sadness as they miss someone no longer with them, as well as loneliness. If the "blueness" lasts a long time, it could be a serious case of depression. Treatments today are highly effective for depression, though medication may take 4-12 weeks to produce results. Personal physicians should be consulted in cases of serious depression. Activities Which Affected Our City On April 17, 2012, at 10:15 a.m., Utah had a magnitude 7.0 earthquake exercise.
