Many cities are deciding what precautions are appropriate to address the dry conditions, protect their communities, and restrict firework and firearm use in a manner consistent with state law. The Utah Fireworks Act states that cities may not enact an ordinance that conflicts with a person's ability to discharge legal fireworks during certain dates in July. However, state law grants authority to cities to regulate the discharge of fireworks and firearms in targeted places that may present a fire hazard. Utah Code §53-7-225(2) states that a person may discharge approved Class C common fireworks in the state between 11:00 a.m. and 11:00 p.m. between July 1 and July 7 and July 21 and July 27 (and until midnight on July 4 and July 24). Cities must allow people to use legal fireworks in certain designated areas. Under state law, firearms cannot be used within 600 feet of a structure and the city may limit use further in dry areas. Presently, Marriott-Slaterville is not imposing additional restrictions on fireworks or firearms beyond that in state law. Residents are encouraged to use fireworks in a safe manner. Be mindful of your surroundings and neighbors when using fireworks and firearms. Keep fireworks and firearms away from dry vegetation and material. Have a safe and fun July.
