This collection contains 74 diaries of Dr. Edward Rich and his wife Almira. They begin in 1892 and run through 1965. The bulk of this collection centers on Almira's diaries that run from 1897-1947. During that time she documented her personal life and the medical practice of Edward, the community of Ogden and national events such as the outbreaks of WWI and WWII. The diaries also include newspaper and magazine clippings, memorabilia and pins. |

Show Friday, Feb. 24. Spent the day off La Libertad watching unloading of castiron water pipe etc. from Ship outo lighter and then towed ashore. No dock here for large boats. Rather dull day as we could not go ashore. We write letter and retire early. The German gets off here and has some difficulty about papers. Saturday, Feb. 25. Cutuco (La Union) Around here at 6 a.m. Boat taking on Cargo of Coffee all day. We walked up to town 1 and a half miles. Very interesting native huts. Village all native market place interesting. Plaza Church Soldiers barocks. Sunny pier. We get natives to bring us back to ship (11.00). Interesting. Hot afternoon. Natives work fast loading ship with coffee. Sunday, Feb. 26. (Alka hutla) Off Acajutla El Salvador. A dull day on ship getting tired of boat. Loading more coffee at this point from liters on open sea. Hope to leave here about midnite and reach San Jose Guatemala at 6 a.m. Shall be glad to get off and see new syhts people etc. Eyht days since we left Ancon Canal Zone. Trip has been sow and uneventful. Monday, Feb. 27. Guatemala city. Arrived here at 5 p.m. after a pleasant trip up from San Jose. Ship arrived off San Jose 530 am. Went ashore in launch at 730 a.m. Met a Mr Hunter on shore & Magie of Grace Co. A nice fellow, helped us a lot took hour at 830 for Esquinta where we wait 3 hours to connect with train from Mexico. Meet a nice Spanish woman. Miss Robles 3rd Ave South Guatemala age about 65 who came down to San Jose to see her niece off for San Francisco. We stop at Pension Gueroult 9A Calle Poniente no 7. Fine old Spanish tavern. Run by a German. Adolph Magin fine fellow. Guatemala very nice. We take Auto and ride around city for one hour before dark. Cool to nite. Walk around city seeing stores & people until 930. Retire. Indians and Mestiston everywhere. |
