Show GERMANY LEADS WAR STATISTICS, SAY OBSERVERS Oct 19 By United Press Statistics recapitulating the first month and a half of the European war today gave Germany, joint conqueror of Poland, a considerable edge in measurable gains over Great Britain and France. With all three countries spending money for military purposes, exclusive of other governmental expenditures, at an estimated annual rate of 5,000,000,000 each, Germany also appeared to have suffered smaller shipping losses than the Allies. The recapitulation follows: Territory gained: Germany Three fifths to two thirds of Polands 150,500 square miles, the remainder going to Russia. Allies Approximately 200 square miles of German soil in the west,the greater part of which, according to Nazi claims, was recaptured in the German attack of Oct. 16. Merchant shipping lost up to Oct. 15: British, 174,530 tons; French, 37,533 tons; German, 34,455 tons; neutral, 61,637 tons; total, 308,155 tons. In this connection, the Allies also claimed to have driven off the seas 2,000,000 tons of contraband destined for Germany. Germany, on the other hand, claims to have seized much goods bound for Britain. Warships lost: Britain, according to German claims more than 100,000 tons. Britain, according to British admiralty figures 51,500 tons. German submarines (sunk or crippled), according to the British admiralty 20. German submarines, according to Germany none. Warplanes lost (in first month): Allies, according to Germany 72. Germany, according to Allies (estimated) 900 in Poland and 36 in west. Casualties: Germany in Poland (Adolf Hitlers figures) 10,572 killed; 30,332 wounded; 3,409 missing. Royal air force (British admiralty figures up to Oct. 13) 60 killed, 71 missing, nine wounded.
