Far Flung Baffle Lines Covering All Wesfern Europe To get an impression concerning the extent of the conflict now raging in Europe, one has to consider the bombardment of Warsaw, which had withstood repeated assaults for three weeks, and the fierce fighting reported from both sources of information on the western front 700 miles away. From neutral points word has been coming of air battles waged near the Swiss border, of cannonading off the Norwegian coast, indicating a naval engagement, and of the massing of totalitarian troops on the Belgian frontier. These innocent bystanding nations have put their men under military orders, strengthened their defenses and notified potential enemies that they propose to protect their homes and respective governments to the last drop of blood, if it becomes necessary. Denmark occupies a precarious position, but has taken the same courageous stand. As hundreds of miles by land and water separate these firing zones, with Rumania yet to be heard from, some idea may be gained as to the scope of the war. When Warsaw was finally reduced to ruins, and Poland erased from the map in spite of its heroic defenders, the heavy artillery engaged in that bloody business is to be transported to the French border to help maintain the Siegfried line of forts against the western allies. This is a menace to the democratic powers the seriousness of which cannot be overestimated. Meantime the soviet armies comprising over 4,000,000 men, will continue to occupy Poland to relieve the nazi leaders of any anxiety in that newly made cemetery. War is an expression of primitive cruelty and selfishness. No sane, progressive people have any desire to become involved. Neither do men care to have trouble with a maniac, but it is not always possible to evade his murderous assaults. NEW YORK, Dec. 28. James Wheeler Hill, secretary of the German American bund, pleaded innocent today to a charge of second degree perjury, a misdemeanor, when arraigned following his arrest in the office of District Attorney Thomas E.
