J., Nov. 6 Elder Joseph Fielding Smith of Salt Lake City, Mormon missionary and apostle of the Latter day Saints church, today blamed world chaos on the use of alcohol and tobacco and the failure of women to take the moral leadership which they should. Returning on the Holland American line steamship Zaandam, which docked with 155 passengers, including 71 American citizens, Mr. Smith said in his opinion the people of the world came out of the World war hardened, not softened. In our judgment the use of liquor and tobacco has had much to do with it, said Mr. Smith, who arrived in charge of 30 Mormon missionaries recalled from European posts. Even the European women of the so called better classes have graduated from cigarets to pipes and cigars. Mr. Smith, grandnephew and namesake of the founder of the Mormon church, said it seems the people of Europe cant live in peace. We could see something brewing for some time. It was going to break we knew that. From my Observation, he added, people of the United States and Europe are getting worse instead of better. Mr. Smith said 500 missionaries had returned to the United States since the outbreak of war. Only 11 remain in Europe now, he said.
