Sunday Dec 31. The last day of the Old Year is rather foggy & smoky not cold. Dr & I went to 5 Ward Sunday School. Dr was appointed teacher of the Adult or High Priest class which will Study Church History the New Year. He taught the Adult Class all last year 1939 in the 18 Ward. Sub. Book of Mormon. Was a fine & well prepared teacher. I served a Vic Pres. of same class and was voted in as Vic Pres. of High Priest Adult Class this A.M. in 5 Ward where we are now members. We had a nice Turkey dinner with Myrene & family. Junior & Cleone came in for a while this evening. We are thankful for such dear children as are ours. They are all so kind & considerate. The Lord has been very good to us all the past year. We are indeed thankful to him. Dr & I attended Sacrament meeting. The whole world has been in trouble and is still. It is good to be in America also to be members of the L.D.S. Church. SPECIAL DATA Visited Guatemala & other Central American Republics. 1. Dr and I left home Jan 12 39 for a trip to Panama. Sailed from San Francisco Jan 18 on the Norwegian freighter The Trondanger a boat with but 12 passangers length of boat 550 ft & carrying 8700 tons. Goes along much smoother than a train. 2. Jan 10 Drs Sister Nancy Rich Pugmire died. She was 84 years old. She died at her home in St. Charles Idaho. April 17 39 Janath Russell our eldest grandchild was elected Phi Beta Kappa. She will be graduated from Wellesley University in June with many honors. She was a Durant scholar the Junior & Senior years this is the highest honor given at Wellesley. She is 20 yr old. May 7. Joseph W. Brewer Jr baptized by his father confirmed by E I Rich June Janath Russell received a call to go on a mission for L.D.S. to France June 18 Juniors & Blanchs baby was blessed and named today by Junior E. & Edward I Rich named Carolyn. She was over a year old & blessed at their home. June 20th Janath graduated with honors at Wellesley U. Mass. 29th June Janath sailed with her father for Europe. She will fill a mission for L.D.S. Church in France. July Thair was given charge of Surgery Dept. at Gorgas hospital in Panama S.C. Sept 8 Jr and Blanch went by train to San Francisco.
