BERLIN Germany announces sweeping victories over Poland and quiet on western front; on to Warsaw' is German cry; German troops 35 miles north of Polish capital. Polish civilian sniping bothers German invaders. BUDAPEST Diplomatic dispatches report Germans shelling Warsaw and incessent German air raids though Warsaw dispatches failed to mention any shelling; Polish government sets up headquarters at Lubin in the interior. PARIS French general staff announces local advances on western front against German fortifications; two air raid alarms, in Paris; German scouting planes sighted over Le Havre on English Channel French apparently feeling out German fortifications line on western front. LONDON Britain reports series of successes in drive against German shipping; claim success in Monday raid on German fleet; 9,000,000 leaflets dropped urging Germans to get rid of Hitler; death toll of 44 counted from sinking of British liner Athenia. WASHINGTON. Declaring United States neutrality and invoking 1937 neutrality act, President, Roosevelt arranges further steps to keep America out of war and strengthen American defenses. ROME Italy pursues neutral course taut keeps war machine in readiness. |
